Why do I NEED to cook edamame?

I have always just taken a handful out of the freezer, let them thaw and eat it like that. I bought a new brand of edamame and the bag said this:

"For food safety and quality, follow cooking instructions. Product needs to be fully cooked. Cook to an internal temperature of 165."

I understand about the quality because sometimes the beans will sprout. But I never knew you HAD to cook it.

Am I doing something bad for my body if I don't cook it?

Have you tried Googling it? I just did and there were tons of sites.

I did. However, some sites say it is ok to eat it raw while others say it is a no-no. I was confused so I figured one of the Cathletes would know the answer. Besides....I trust the Cathletes :).

I think you can at edamame raw; however, if they're suggesting heating to 165, my guess is that it is for food safety issues....e.g., avoiding e coli, salmonella, etc.

Yeah, if I think too much about food production it grosses me out...can't believe this is a problem even when trying to eat whole foods. The company can't be bothered to be clean enough to ensure my food isn't tainted, so it's easier (well, cheaper) just to tell me to heat it. or maybe they are as clean as reasonable, but it's a liability thing. Either way, nobody wants food poisoning!
