why diets do not work

Hi Everyone!

I am writing an essay on why diets do not work and thought i would come over to the educated crowd to get your feedback.

Anyone have any opinions that they wish to share?

Karen

Hi Karen,

You might want to check out Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. He discusses several of the popular diets and explains why they do not work. It would be a good reference for your paper.

The Thrive Diet, by Brendan Brazier is also full of information about nutrition. Although he does not write on specific diet plans, you may be able to use the information when you are presenting evidence for/against certain types of diets.

Both of these authors have websites, and Brendan is currently offering a free video series based on his book:

Hope this helps,

My opinion is that diets are temporary, . . and that eating healthy and excersize is a lifestyle change that can never end. I don't believe in low fat, no carb, high protien, . . .all the diets out there that ask me to count calories taken in or burned. I just eat foods that are natural and not overly processed make sure that I recognize whether I am hungry or just bored and I do excersize that I enjoy or have fun doing. I eat small meals every day so that I can prevent myself from being hungry and gorging on my meals. I also allow myself small indulgences because I find that when you deprive yourself of foods that you are so used to eating you can become disgruntled, discouraged, and start to feel hopeless and then end up throwing your hands in the air and giving up. Good luck with your paper. Let us all know how it goes.

My personal opinion (sadly based on many years of experience), is that diets don't work because they are, by design, temporary. There is a start date and when/if you get to your goal, there is an end date. Once you reach that end date, MOST people go back to what they know and the way they used to eat. They gain the weight back (and then some!) and the cycle starts all over again! As Janie1234 said, the worst is when you feel deprived on a diet, you will normally wind up overeating on whatever it was you felt you were missing.

Good luck Karen! Let us know if you discover the "Holy Grail" formula!
