Hey evryone,
I was eating dannon light n fit yogurt, recently i read tht fructose is really bad for u, i checked the container and guess wht the dannon tht i have been eating is sweetened with fructose (and aspartame, but tht is not so bad), i have to get rid of tht, besides tht i have some lowfat milk, but i was just wondering wht yogurt do u eat and if u do wht kind of cheese and how much is one serving??
neha.

I am not sure on serving size, but on the package they should tell you cals per serving, and you can go from there.

I eat the flavored lite yogurt, it is loaded with carbs, aspartame, sugar, whatever. :)

If you want to avoid that, buy plain yogurt and flavor it yourself with a little bit of honey, fresh fruit, wheat germ, etc. It's a lot healthier, and you can control your sweetner.

I buy plain non-fat yougurt, I add blueberries, or strawberries, sweeten with stevia, and sometimes, I add ground flaxseed to add omega 3 to it. I have learn to love it!

Actually, fructose is not bad. It's fruit sugar. high-fructose corn syrup is bad. And it's not because it's really that high in fructose, but because it's highly processed and has other sugars in as well. Fructose is a low glycemic sweetener that is useful in diabetic diets.

Aspartame, on the other hand, is something I avoid at all costs. It's an artificial sweetener. One of our forum members has a father who has done research on the effects of artificial sweeteners (sorry,, I can't remember who it is), and she can tell you lots of bad points about aspartame.

I don't bother with low fat anything.

I eat regular cheeses: cheddar (nice stuff imported from Scotland, UK and Canada without addded orange colouring), manchego from Spain, Cambozola from Germany, Jarlsberg (the only one to use skimmed milk).

I don't eat masses of it every day, or even eat cheese every day, so I seee no reason to scrimp and fuss over fat content. I'm vegetarian, I don't get fat from meat and I don't eat junk food, so I figure.....

I also eat full cream milk organic yoghurts, although I take the cream off the top and throw it away because it's a little too sickly, even for me. I hate low fat yogs where extra sugar or sweetener is added to make the product actually palateable. Beware with low fat products: there has to be a compensation somewhere for the removed fat content.

I also drink full fat milk in coffee (latte) and 2% for all other purposes.

Skimmed milk or anything less than 2% tastes like cardboard or worse, so forget it.

I have a low risk profile for heart disease as is proven by yearly blood work, so my diet seems just fine to me. I'm not a foodie, not a gourmande, and eat less than the average person, but taste, when I do decide to eat, matters!

I use soy for milk, yogurt, kefir. But not the cheese. I think it's gross. :p Of course, I think regular cheese is pretty gross. When I have it it just gets moldy. I sometimes buy organic cow's milk yogurt if it's on sale, but it seems so tart after the soy. I only buy plain, and sweeten it with jam or real fruit.

With all the vegetables I eat, plus weight bearing exercise, plus soy, plus whatever's in my multi and my supplements, my bones are in excellent shape.

I eat cheese, yogurt and sometimes ice cream (if that's considered dairy). As far as the servings go I read the labels and I determine how big or small my serving is going to be based on fat, protein, and sugars. I'm glad someone told you about fructose. Fructose per se is not bad but syrups made with it are (e.g high fructose corn syrup) as far as artificial sweeteners I avoid them at all costs and in the market those are mostly aspartame and sucralose better known as Equal and Splenda. Of course if I see saccharin (also known as benzosulfimide) I run fast!! That is one artificial sweetener that I'm scared of. Sometimes it is really hard to avoid artificial sweeteners because they're hidden on a lot of diet products but I try really hard to avoid them.

I eat low fat string cheese..it has a whopping 9 grams of protein per stick, and only 60 calories and no carbs...of course there is brands out there that have fewer grams of protein.. I also drink skim or light soy milk..soy milk is yummy!! I eat a little fat free shredded cheese on my salads..I was eating some light and fit yogurt and some sugar free pudding and fat free/sugar free coolwhip and I had the worst abdominal bloating and gas...horrible!! I stopped eating it and now I feel fine..go figure..LOL

RE:long answer...

I eat the Bryers Light yogurt. It has 100 calories, 9g sugar, 8g protein and 1.5 g fat. It has the least amount of sugar and most protein per serving that I can find and still be low fat. It also has live yogurt cultures. The Key Lime Pie and vanilla-cherry are flavorful and not fake tasting.

For cheese, I buy the 75% reduced fat cheddar block from BJ's. I cut them into 2 oz. chunks and wrap them individually so a chunk is 2 servings of dairy. I will also use fat free feta cheese and fat free shredded cheddar. The shredded fat free cheddar is not great , but it works for a " taco salad" with beans, salsa and scallions and romaine.

Edit to add: skim milk for lattes and cereal.

I will eat mozzerella on a good pizza or any specialty pizza with interesting cheese for a treat. And I couldn't live with out imported parmesean cheese for my mediterranean dishes.

From what I understand, High Fructose Corn Syrup is digested differently than sugar. Sugar is digested in the intestines and broken down there but High Fructose Corn Syrup is sent straight to the liver and the liver will store this as fat. There was a article on this in AARP that my mom showed me and the guy quoted was upset that sugar and high fructose corn syrup were thought of as being the same when it absolutely was not. Aspartame is made with wood alcohol like formaldehyde, which I get a headache from anyway so I avoid it! Splenda is made with Chlorine, not anything I really want to eat.
Back to what dairy I eat, I eat 2%Kemps cottage cheese, a local (Beechwood) cheese because it is so fresh compared to the grocery store. Stoneyfield yogurt, little bits of ice cream, and no milk.

Fat-free cheddar or swiss cheese, low-fat cottage cheese, fat-free high-protein milk, regular soy milk (has less sugar). That's it. I'm not into yogurt that much.:)

The problem with those sugary sweet yogurts for me is that I can't eat just one. If I have 4 in the fridge, I'll just eat all 4. I think I have a sugar addiction. I'm fine as long as I don't eat anything overly sweetened though. No surprise, fruit has just the right amount of sweetness for me that doesn't cause an addictive reaction.

As for dairy products, I love Friendship 1% fat cottage cheese, and I make my morning oatmeal with a full cup of skim milk.

(As an aside, my nutritionist has me taking 4 GNC Calcimate Plus 800 tablets per day. They deliver 50% of my daily vitamin D, 80% of calcium, 25% of magnesium and 3% of potassium. She says this is the right mix).

I like your yogurt recipe, Logos. Sounds like something even I could eat.
