Who wants to diagnose me? Migraines?

Last night, I felt terribly nauseous and had a headache. I've had this type of headache before but not for quite some time. The last time I had them, I got them a few times a month for many months, and I thought maybe I had a TMJ disorder, because the pain is on one side. It feels like it is behind my eye and almost in my ear. The headaches seemed to have gone away on their own, but I got one a few weeks ago.

This one isn't too bad, but it's there. I recall times when I couldn't function at all for a day or so. Is this a migraine?

Here's another weird and possibly unrelated thing. My right arm has been having weird sensations for a few weeks now. At first, it felt like someone was lightly tickling me. Sometimes, it feels sort of like the feeling you get when a body part "falls" asleep" and is in the process of waking up. I'm wondering if there is a connection. Could this be that aura thing?

Thanks for reading :)

It certainly sounds migraine-like, especially the part about not being able to function for a day. The issue with your right arm is definitely not aura-like though.

I would suggest, as I always do in these cases, that you see your doctor, as none of us are and therefore any "diagnosis" we could offer may be way off, and you really should get that looked at.

Thanks, Shelley. I talked to my mom about the arm thing, and she thinks it might be a pinched nerve. My doctor kind of stinks, so I wanted to have some idea of what might be up before going there lol! I know...time for a new doc!

The headache may be related to the pinched nerve, may not. The best thing is to write down what you have eaten(and drank or not drank as in caffeine withdrawel), how you have slept, what the weather is like, to see if there is a link to the episodes.

Along with an MD, try looking into massage therapy and/or chiropractic, which can help with both migraines and pinched nerves.

I second dorothyrd's suggestion. I hope you feel better, Gina. :)

Thanks guys! I am going to take your suggestions, dorothyd. Luckily, I took Aleve as soon as I felt the headache coming on, and I feel much better now :)

I won't call myself an expert (I don't have an MD) but I do suffer (well, used to, knock on wood) from classic cyclical cluster migraines and what you're describing is consistent with them. The right arm thing is very common...I would get that same sensation in my right arm, my right leg and, if it was a severe enough migraine, my left leg as well. The aura that people describe pertains to odd visual symptoms. Some people see shooting stars, some see halos around objects, I feel like I am looking through a tightly woven web. There are so many symptoms that sometimes seem unrelated to the headache, but are, in fact, part of a migraine. Some people don't get headache pain at all...I was one of those. That's why they can be hard to diagnose sometimes.

You really should have it checked out by a physician. I also have to agree with paying a visit to the chiropractor as, often times, a small subluxation can trigger one of these nasty little buggers. There are also many food triggers to keep in mind...caffeine, chocolate, cheese, anything with a lot of sulfites, MSG, etc.

Just my two cents from someone who's been there more times than I care to remember.

Good luck,
Wendi

Thanks for sharing, Wendy. I'm going to start keeping track of potential triggers and make an appt. with the doc.

Gina, my daughter was diagnosed a few months ago. Her doc told her to take ibuprofen at the first signs that one is coming on. She sees the dancing lights and loses her peripheral vision at the onset. Apparently if you can catch it as it starts, it can be stopped. Once it gets going, it may have to run it's miserable course. Should ibuprofen not work, we are going to try Imitrex. Happily, she has not had one since the three which were her first. Good luck. I am so sorry you are a sufferer. Hugs and warm wishes to you!

Hey Bobbi! It's so nice to hear from you. How have you been?

I'm sorry about your daughter's migraines but so glad they seem to be staying at bay! I hate to feel like I am popping pills, but this is one case in which I agree that you should go straight for them when you feel it coming on!

Thanks :)

It's nice to "see" you too, Gina although I wish you weren't being diagnosed with dreadful migraines. I am very well. Happy, busy, madly in love with Cathe's workouts, trying to stay cool. And I mean that both ways. ;) Sydney had three migraine's and they were very severe. Happily, they have been infrequent and I hope that remains true. It was scary at first because her vision was affected. She's a great kid, and took it like a real trooper. We were relieved it was migraine and not a brain tumor or something equally horrific. She's my easy breezy girl, good-natured, funny and bright. We are all settleing bag to survive and enoy these dog days of summer. I hope you find something that works for your headaches. Migraines are awful! I am getting back into the forums after a hiatus. It's nice to chat with you!

My son has suffered from migraines all his life, and my daughter had what they call abdominal migraines up to age 5(she would just start vomitting from pain in her stomach and not stop until IV intervention, this happened every 3 months). They are not fun, but there is a lot more things to help them out now. I did have a bad experience with proponalol(SP?), which is a beta blocker. It slowed my metabolism way down, made me feel awful and I gained 20 pounds in 3 months. It took 2 years of hard work after going off it to get my metabolism up and going again. So any preventive meds should be looked at real hard for side affects.

I suffered from migraines my whole life, with particular severity during my period. I would sometimes have a headache for three days, with all the accompaniments such as nausea, diarrhea, mood swings, blurred vision, extreme sensitivity to light, sound, smells, touch, joint pains, muscle soreness, excessive thirst, etc. The as years went on it got worse and worse; and I started to feel like maybe I was being poisoned or something! I finally had a nutritionist recommend cutting MSG out of my diet and the turnaround has been incredible! Apparently, many people who get migraines are MSG sensitive and don't know it. Obviously, the cleaner you eat the easier it is to avoid the stuff, since processed and restaurant foods are absolutely loaded with it, and it hides under many names such as hydrolyzed anything, monosodium glutamate, even "spices" and "natural flavorings." Also aspartame is chemically similar and can cause similar reactions in people. It wouldn't hurt to try cutting it out for a while to see if you improve, though is a lot of work to prepare all foods from scratch! If this is what is going on with you it doesn't sound like you have as extreme a sensitivity as I do and probably wouldn't have to be as watchful as I am. It may or may not be the case, but I also read that MSG damages the hypothalamus and contributes to obesity and neurogenerative diseases, so we are all better off avoiding the stuff. I haven't had a migraine in months! I feel like I have my life back and it is a great feeling. :)

What causes a migraine type headache for me (nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, etc.) is my sinus allergies. And due to the fact that they are pollen related, it is not consistent. I have to just go to bed, hurts to put my head on a pillow, can't sleep, eat or talk. Just lay there until I can get my sinuses to clear up with various little "tricks" that I keep working on. Never have the nerve problem from the headaches though, that's related to computer use and lifting weights usually.

Just my own observation. You may also try googling or checking out a few websites like Web MD or Mayo clinic to see what other things may be causing it before you see a doctor. And if your doctor doesn't seem to great at a diagnosis, see another one. Going in educated is a great idea !

Good luck.
