Do you knit the socks on doublepointed needles? That seems so hard to learn....

Hey Jes,

I don't really knit, but I crochet! I've tried knitting before and I just didn't find it nearly as easy as crocheting. Before I was married, I used to crochet all the time - afghans, scarfs, doilies, etc. I used to love making snowflake Christmas ornaments too - they make great holiday gifts! Keep trying with the knitting - you may get the hang of it eventually. But if it frustrates you too much, give crocheting a try! It's super-easy (I taught myself), and you can do it almost anywhere - at home, in the car (not while driving!), in waiting rooms, etc.

yes on double pointed needles--its surprisingly easy if you already know the basics of knitting--

the "scary" part of knitting socks is that you knit the tube in the round (easy-- K2P2 a coupla inches for cuff then stockinette stitch for a bunch more inches) but then you knit the heel flap, shape the round bottom of the heel (using 'short rows--very easy) and then pick up the stitches along the side of the flap to return to the tube shape and knit it all in one piece. any book on knitting socks will have very detailed instructions (i learned from 'folk socks' by nancy bush) knittinghelp.com has video of knitting on circular and picking up the heel flap (shaping the gusset) in the advanced tips section



there are several fabulous brands of self striping, wool blend washable sockyarns that basically knit themsemselves--
im about to start these as xmas present for DBFs mom in "storm"

Another knitter here! Been knitting for about 15 years or so (wow, didn't realize it had been that long until I thought about it). I've been quite prolific over the last year - several hats, scarves and sweaters. I'm wearing one of my latest projects today even though it's barely cold enough out to wear it - I couldn't wait any longer. An alpaca sweater with four different kinds of cables all over it. I impressed myself with this one!! It's my favorite hobby - as everyone has previously stated, it's very soothing - almost zen-like when you get a rhythm going - and you can do it while watching tv. It's a great rainy/cold day hobby.
