Which is best?

I know you burn more calories by doing cardio, before you eat, right after you get out of bed, but I have always heard that you are suppose to eat as soon as you get out of bed so which is best?

I've always heard better to workout first thing on empty stomach, then eat within an hour of finishing your workout. Sometimes eating then working out makes some people queasy.. Thats my opinion, but I'm no expert, its the way I do it, works for me.

Honestly, I think it is whatever works best for you. I'm not sure everyone can workout on an empty stomach right out of bed. I wouldn't think the calorie burn would be that different if you eat a little something to coat your stomach before you workout. Maybe you just don't want as much after the workout. I think it probably balances out.

I eat a banana before I workout every morning. There was a great article on this forum a couple of weeks (I think you may have been on vacation) ago about how your body needs carbs before you work out and then carbs and protein after you workout. I have always eaten a banana before I work out because it doesn't make sense to me to wo on an empty stomach (where is your energy coming from?). I usually last a lot longer when I have something in me. The few times that I have wo without any food I have felt light headed and gotten dizzy easily afterward, especially doing Cathe or lifting weights. To me, that is a sign that it shouldn't be done.

Hey Charlotte!
If I'm doing cardio, and am going to workout within a 1/2 hr. of getting up, I don't eat. If it's longer I have some protein. If I'm doing weights and cardio, I eat. Definatley. Carbs and protein.

That works for me. But everyone is different. Gotta go with what your body is telling you. :7

Have a good one!

I have done an easier work out in the morning on an empty stomach and been okay but I prefer to eat a bowl of cereal or something first. I have more energy if I eat. Plus, I usually do not work out early enough to do that anyway.

I think it's a personal choice. Which ever is better for you is the right choice. The fact that a person exercises at all is what is most important in my book! :)

I've noticed when I eat something small I have a ton of energy and can really push it. If I don't eat, I can't push as hard, mostly due to my fuel being non-existent. So I always have something to eat, as I like to push and burn as many calories as I can.

It depends on what I'm doing. I just can't eat before cardio, I cramp up & it makes me sick. But I have to eat before I lift, otherwise I feel really weak.

I always eat something before working out in the early morning. I can't workout as hard as I like with the empty stomach.

I think you'll have to try them both and see what you like best. I personally never eat before I work out in the AM and it suits ME just fine.

Let us know what you decide to do...

I believe the theory is, if you do cardio workouts 1st thing in the a.m. on an empty stomach, your body calls upon stored body fat for energy. If you eat before your cardio session, your body call upon the food you just consumed.

I have done both. Eating 100-200 calories before cardio has proven to work better for me because when I do cardio on an empty stomach 1st thing in the a.m., I have noticed that I am significantly hungrier throughout the rest of the day, resulting in a much greater calorie consumption in the long run. If I eat a little something in the a.m. (about 30-60 minutes before cardio) I am not as hungry the rest of the day.

Sarah,

Hmmm. Eating or not eating before a.m. cardio has never affected my appetite. I just eat before cardio on the weekends because I do my cardio a little later...say 8:30 versus 5:30 during the week.

I guess it's something you just have to try and see how it works for you :)

Well thanks for all the advice. I was just wondering. Hubby and I took off on the treadmills while on vacation and I we did so on empty stomachs and we were both quite dizzy after 45 mins at a running pace. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't causing my body to store more fat while working out on a empty stomach I usually love to eat before and after workouts, but I just wanted to see if there was a way to burn more fat by going without food and then doing cardio. Guess it doesn't really make too much of a difference?

Charlotte,

That's a yes and no question. It does make a difference if you can't push as hard on a empty stomach. If you can't then you don't burn as much. If you can then you'll burn the same. There has been quite a few studies done with workout out on an empty stomach and for some people it does toss them into starvation mode during and a little bit after a workout. As they haven't had food for at least 8 hours, usually a bit longer then the 8 hours, as most of us don't eat right before bed. So your looking usually at a good 10 hours or a bit more of no food and then you decide to jump around and do all this activity, on top of not having food for 10 hours +. Something you'd never do, if you were awake all day. How may times have you decided to workout 10 hours after breakfast with no snacks or other meals in between? Just is a no go, for any of us who workout out hard. But we'll do it after sleeping, the night away. And this is the reason why some people go into starvation mode when they do this, it's just too many hours without food and 0 fuel, for them.

There as also been quite a few studies done about this, and on a 75% average you lose weight better if you eat before working out then not eating. But there's also that 25% in there, that for some reason it didn't matter if they ate or not.

HTH,

Kit
