which HRM tells you how many calories you have burned?

Most of them will, I think. I know for sure that Polar HRM give cal burned. Also percentage of time spent in target heart rate.

thanks smoggy. i forgot to ask where i can get one and about how much they cost. do yo happen to know that as well?

Any Oshman's, Acadamy or sporting goods store has them. They usually keep them at the front counter. Walmart has them on their website.

I really like mine. I have a calendar that I mark each day with my workouts as well as the calories burned. It keeps me motivated.

thanks smoggy! that is exactly what i needed to know! i am putting it on my xmas list! by the way, since you track oall of your workouts for calories burned(great idea) which workouts burn the most calories? i did a post trying to find out if cardio or strength burned more. if i had to guess based on my exhaustion, i would say imax2 burns the most! am i right? }(

RE: which HRM tells you how many calories you have burn...

I got mine at Oshman's. It's a big sporting goods store in case your not familiar with it.

Also I'm looking back through my calendar & this is what I've noticed:

Running 1 hour is about 570 cal
leg & glutes 250 cal
cardio & wts 390 cal
PLB 230
PUB 190
Imax II 430 cal
Power Hour 200 cal
Boot Camp 460
MIC 600
Imax extreme 577 ( this was the exact same cal burn on two different months- interesting)
Rythmic step 440
Body Max 661
Terminator 660
KPC 480
Step Blast & challenge 530
Leaner Legs + 200 lunges 450 cal

Sorry if I went overboard with the stats. I do think the circuit training kicks it up a notch. And I just don't discount the benefits I get from wt training. It keeps me burning calories even when I'm not working out. It also depend on how much effort you put in @ each particular session. But Cathe motivates me. I can here her voice saying "I know you're tired, but jump higher."

Again I apologize for the long post.

Don't apologize! that is an awesome post! i can believe SB/challenge was more calories than imax2 though because after i did SB the other night i was just as tired as when i do imax! I think i like SB more though because it is less jumping and my knees love that! thanks for all the info!

RE: which HRM tells you how many calories you have burn...

WOW Smoogy. Those are high numbers. I am now wondering if there is something wrong with my HRM. It asks me to input my weight, height , sex and fitness level. I am 5'7'' and 133lbs. The max calories I burn is during Guantlet (350 calories) and typically only about 250 calories during Stepblast and RS. Weight work is significantly less especially upper body work. I am aerobically quite fit and work hard to stay in my target range. I also do interval work a few times a week. Is my low calorie burn relative to yours just a discrepancy bewteen HRM (anyone do a comparison of various HRMs...mine is from RadioShack)or due to differences in aerobic capacity. I want to be able to burn more calories.

RE: which HRM tells you how many calories you have burn...

Well, I hope I am burning those calories. I also am aerobically fit but I tend to stay in 85%. I have to slow myself down sometimes. I tried to find info about exceeding 85% & I found that working in the 65% to 85% was outdated, especially if you're cardiovascularly fit. I have been running since I was 15 y/o. But one of the doctor's I work with told me to slow down.
Anyway, I never get nauseous or headaches or too out of breath.:+ So hopefully I won't stroke out.

Cathy...

My HRM comes in calorie-wise like yours, so I don't think there is anything wrong with yours!! HRM are fun when you first get them. Nice to have, especially when they tell you calories!!

RE: which HRM tells you how many calories you have burn...

I have the Polar A5 which also tracks your calories burned and it only cost $99 versus $150. My HRM was accurate to the best of my knowledge because I would manually check my pulse against it. Since I'm an RN, I don't have a hard time checking pulses.

But I would like to know if it is safe to train @ a moderatly high intensity about 4-5 times a week. I got on Polar website & they said for weight loss work out @ 60-70%. I find that kind of boring actually.

Another question I had is if you have always maintained such a high intensity are you still supposed to decrease your target HR every year just because you age. I live in Dallas & I have been tempted to go get a thorough evaluation @ the Cooper Aerobics Center just to see how I really measure up. Has anyone done this before & what does this entail? I imagine a stress test for one.

RE: which HRM tells you how many calories you have burn...

i'm afraid to get tested. i don't want to hear "you are the weakest link" buzzer sounds..i fall through a trap door in the floor. not appealing! i'm huffin' and puffin' and sweatin' and that tells me "honey, you ain't there yet"..

but seriously marla, i think it's not a bad idea for you because you are in shape and the "test" could just help you plan your next strategic move

let me know what they say! btw, i saw your comment about knowin i was texan on my movie quote post. cute!

if you don't hear from me after tomorrow, assume i drowned in cool whip!

p.s. i don't really talk to myself outloud i promise:7

RE: which HRM tells you how many calories you have burn...

I train several times (2-3 times a week) a week in my interval range and the rest in the upper limits of my target zone. I have to really work hard to get it up there though, modify to put plyos and high impact moves to get my heart rate up there. As far as the HRMs go, I am not questioning the accuracy of the HRMs ability to monitor heartbeats but rather it seems that different algorithms are being used to calculate calorie expenditure based on heart rate. I am wondering if the different companies are calculating calorie expenditure differently. I am also going to try entering a different (lower) fitness level in my HRM and see if it gives me a different calorie expenditure. That could also be a difference. I just bought a Polar m32 and its giving me similar readings to the RadioShack (with the same parameters entered in).

RE: which HRM tells you how many calories you have burn...

WOW! I would LOVE to get tested at some fancy-shmancy aerobics center! Go for it! Let us know what you find out!!
