We went for a Sole Elliptical E55. It's very pricey but worth it. Closest thing to what we could afford that resembled an elliptical at the gyms. Every person who gets on it in my house is amazed with how nice it is.
Do not go cheap when buying an elliptical. Go to craigslist and buy a quality one. If you buy a cheap one then most likely you will quit using it because of it's bumps, noises or non-smooth operation.
I found this website extremely helpful when I was trying to decide which elliptical to buy. They rate/review most brands and models in various price ranges. http://www.fitness-equipment-source.com/
Oh my gosh, I forgot to mention that if and when you get an elliptical, you definitely NEED to invest in Cardio Coach workouts!! They're fantastic audio guided cardio workouts that will take your elliptical experience to a whole new level! (also great with ANY cardio equipment, and for outdoor running and walking) http://www.cardiocoach.com/
