Whey protein powder and when to drink them??

Hi everyone,

My DH drinks the Whey protein by Optimum Nutrition. It has 23 grahms of protein per scoop(if mixed with water). I was thinking about trying it. I don't feel that I get enough protein in my diet and I am hoping that this will help a little. I was thinking of just drinking for recovery after my weight workouts. I usually lift 3 days a week. Is this the way to go or should I drink this daily? DH says I should drink it daily, but he and I have different goals. I just want to get lean and cut and he wants to look like Arnold:eek: . I know that too much protein is not good for the liver, so I want to use the drink properly.

I use it mainly for recovery after a hard workout, so just in the mornings when I do. . And it's true guys usually have different goals. I did read Whey is the best protein for helping your muscles recover. At least thats my opinion...:)...Carole

Hi Aila,

I don't think drinking a 23gm protein drink daily will hurt you unless you are consuming tons of protein in general. In my opinion, diets such as Atkins advocate an unsafe amount of protein. A lot of my guy friends who attempt to get Arnold-ized eat like 6 chicken breasts per day- that's a little overboard. SO, as long as you don't go overboard during the rest of the day, the drink should be okay.

Like Carole mentioned, many people enjoy a protein drink in the morning after I workout. I usually drink mine at lunch or dinner, though, because I get the hungries later in the day, and this seems to curb the cravings.

Sami...for me I do believe that a supplement protein powder and a weightlifting program are helpful for muscle recovery and I do feel I have gotten some good results (more definition) while using them. My question is does it really make a difference of what type of protein powder is better or are they all pretty much the same as far as benefits and results...:)...I keep researching.....Carole

I use optimium also but with skim milk. From all I have read for muscle growth is 30-45 min after wt workout.I drink mine immediatley following.I think after that window of time it's "not as effective" at least that's what I've read. From what I read whey is the better protein as it is used by your body right then with no need for breakdown.I know for me personally the whey has done more muscle definition wise than soy protein which is what I use to use.

RE: How long did it take to see results??

Hi Sheila or Carole,

I did start drinking it a few days ago and I feel a bit bloated for about an hour afterwards. I am mixing a scoop to a 8 oz. glass of skim milk. About how long did it take to see results after starting the protein powder?

Aila:)

RE: How long did it take to see results??

Hi Aila...the results are probably different for everyone but my experience so far was a compilation of things. I majorly changed my diet, I started a P90X rotation. I use the protein powder in a smoothie with fruit, flaxseed, soymilk. It doesn't ever make me feel bloated and I saw results in about 2 weeks and it does keep getting better for me...:)...Carole

RE: How long did it take to see results??

Hi, I am no expert but do you think that it is the milk product that is making you feel bloated? I know for me it would be the milk so I use soy. Just a thought:).

RE: How long did it take to see results??

I was actually fine yesterday after the drink. I drank it a little slower this time. I think that was part of the problem. I have been wanting to try the soy milk, but haven't gotten around to buying it yet:) . I will have to make sure I put that on my list this week.

Aila:)

RE: How long did it take to see results??

Aila....I didn't have much problem at all switching to soymilk. I don't think bloating from regular milk was a problem for me...I use regular and vanilla soymilk...vanilla is a bit sweeter...:)...Carole

I just read in the Men's Health Book of Muscle, that it's a good idea to have protein BEFORE a weight workout so that it is ready to go into the muscle to begin repair right after the workout. Elsewhere, I've read that having a feeding that contains protein and carbs within 5 minutes of the end of a workout is best.

Guess it depends on who you listen to/read.
