Whey Protein for Women ??

Just wondering, how many of you are using whey protein supplements to complement your diet and weight training program?

I was at GNC today to get a tub of pure whey protein powder to supplement my current diet and fitness regime. I am not getting enough protein as I would like, and to top it off, I lift weights as well. I thought that I needed more protein to rebuild my muscles after my workout so that I can get good definition.

Those salespeople at GNC tried their best to steer me away from the huge tubs of whey protein lined up at the shelf (all of them had huge hulky men on the label), and instead pointed me to protein meal replacements designed for women to lose weight! The nerve x( . I tried explaining to them that I wanted protein powder as a supplement because I do weight lifting. Somehow they had a hard time registering that fact and repeatedly suggest I go for the protein weight loss thingy.

I walked off from the store not buying anything, but will be going to another GNC outlet soon.

Can anyone share their experience with whey protein supplements? I know that it is ridiculous to think that they are exclusively for men and that consuming them will lead to huge bulky muscles for women.

I have used whey protein powder for about 3 or 4 years until recently as I switched to soy protein powder. Whey is not exclusively for men and I don't look at all like a male body builder!

I have always read that whey is very good for muscle recovery after a workout. I am not sure it makes a differnce what kind of protein you use as having switching to soy I still am getting results from my workouts.

I know we are all different and I know you will get more responses. This link has alot of info on protein powders. http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/totalprotein.htm hope this helps....:)...Carole

I don't know if this will help you at all but I use Biotest Grow protein powder and absolutely love it. It has whey protein isolate, milk caseinate, and milk protein isolate. It is 110 calories per serving, 3g carbs and 0 fat. I don't know about you but taste is crucial to me. This stuff thinkens a bit when mix it up and the less water, the more it thikens almost to a pudding consistency. It tastes just like cake batter.

I've been using whey protein for more than a year now, and if whey protein were really for bulking up, then why am I still in a size 2/4? I like whey protein because it has less carbs than soy protein. I like getting my carbs from other sources like slow-cooking oatmeal and fruit. This way, I feel like I'm eating more, and not just gulping down a glass of meal replacement. This is more of a personal preference than anything. Also, protein supplements (whether soy or whey) are just that -- supplements. Nothing beats real, good, clean food.

Well, I just wish there was a real good clean food that tastes like a Vanilla milk shake. :+

I've been using the Designer Whey chocolate flavor after my evening workouts. Sometimes I'll just have that instead of dinner. I mix it in a smoothie blender with ice and 1% milk. I'll add a little vanilla extract too. YUMMY!

Pinky, it has been my quest to find a soy protein with less carbs! Genisoy is the worst with 18g per serving but I have found another that is only 11 and a rice one that is 10. And yes I do agree food is much better than supplements....but it seems to be ingrained in my head that you need a bit more protein when when you workout strenuosly and since I am trying hard to be vegan that's why I made the switch...:)...Carole

I have been using Spirutein for years. It's great. I've tried the rice protein too, and one called Veg, which was mostly soy. I've been trying to get away from the sweeteners and using pure plant-protein like the rice one and the Veg one, but the Spirutein works well, tastes great, and has been my main product for many years.

As far as the guys at GNC, I'm sorry they were so ignorant and stubborn. Good for you for going elsewhere for your protein powders. I get mine at Whole Foods or the local health food store.

I was looking at the ones I had tried and Spirutein is the one I like best so far too! Happy to hear Mogambo that you have been trying to use pure plant protein and that you have been using this one for years...:)..Carole

Ack - stupid salespeople. Are there still folks out there who don't know women train with weights?

I've used Designer Whey for a number of years. It's a convenience thing for me - I don't always have the time, patience, appetite or energy to make a whole-foods snack or post-workout meal. A scoop or two of protein powder in the blender, plus liquid and some chopped-up fruit, is an easy healthy meal for me.

Hi all, thanks for your feedback. Now that I think of it, probably the salespeople were told to clear the old stock of some protein product that wasn't selling well by directing customers to it. And then came a petite woman (me), looking quite overwhelmed with the huge tubs of protein supplements that they thought I was a sure bait.

Faie, just a side note, and don't take this to mean a diss to those GNC people, but I NEVER shop GNC. I think they're overpriced and a lot of them go for the hard sell, which is extremely irritating. I do my research and browsing online, then I hit the big stores -- Walmart, Sam's Club, Costco, etc. -- and if I still don't find what I'm looking for, I go on our local yellow pages.

Hi Pinky, thanks for the advice. I live in Malaysia, by the way, so shopping at Walmart is out of the question :) I think I may do some research and look around in other health and nutrition stores. I hope the salespeople are not pushy as well.
