Where to get a good barbell for these workouts?

I wanted one that had cushioning at the neck. Sometime ago, the best one I had was made by the Firm...they don't sell them anymore but it was great...it wasn't long and had cushioning around the neck area. It held standard size weight plates...but that was a more than a few years and few homes ago...
I want to get one similar to that. I looked online but all I see are the traditional weight bars...long with no cushion...

Does anyone know where I can find one? Or are you using one that is really good and would recommend? Meanwhile I have my hand weights but it isn't the same.

I think Danskin sells a cushioned version, although it looks like it's really limited in the amount of weight (22 lbs or so). I have seen those at Walmart. Other options: body bars (I am using one right now and love it even though you can't adjust the weight) or a separate cushion that you can purchase to slide over the bar. Most sporting goods stores sell those.

Good luck!

I'm not aware of a barbell that has a pre-cushioned bar AND can accommodate a number of weight plates like a traditional barbell. However, the Troy Lite system has a shorter, narrower bar and can take up to 80 pounds of weight plates, AND the Troy Lite company also sells a barbell pad to slip on and off for neck comfort. There's a link to one of the companies that markets the Troy Lite system - Fitness 1st - on Cathe's homepage.

I also recommend the Troy Lite, along with a separate barbell pad (which you can sometimes find at Walmart, and more likely at local sporting goods stores).

The only "prepadded" bar I know of is the old Firm barbell, which I don't think they make anymore. It's nice, but the padding is not as much as with the separate pad. You could get the about the same amount of padding as the Firm barbell by wrapping a towel around the bar.

Thanks for all the ideas!

I haven't used a barbell since using the old Firm tapes...which they don't even sell anymore...not many workouts require them...so I am glad I found Cathe and also this forum...I will check out the barbells with all your suggestions!

I have the Troy Lite and would not use anything else.. my DH got some very inexpensive pipe insulator at the hardware store, cut it in small lengths and I can slip it on in seconds, then off when doing deadlifts etc. No need to even take the weights off the ends!

This is my hubby's idea too after complaining the padded ones at Dunham was to bulky.
