Hi All -

I'm looking to buy water filled dumbells to take travelling. Has anyone had experience with these, and can tell me where to order?

Thx

I bought Aquabells, didn't like them

JenL,

If you're considering Aquabells I wouldn't recommend them. I used to travel a lot in my last job and they seemed like a great idea but...

It's kind of clumsy to pack & carry two dumbbell handles, the twist-on clamps and EIGHT vinyl barbell plates. A bit much.

First of all, filling up the "plates" with water takes FOREVER. They have kind of small snouts/plugs and it just takes time to put water in each one and plug it up. I found it easier to fill these the night before I planned to workout and leave them in the shower :) It just took too long - like 45 minutes to fill all 8 plates!

Then when you put 4 plates on each of the dumbbell handles they squish so tight there's only about 2" of room for your hands to hold the handles - it's painful to actually hold onto them!

If you only put on 2 plates then the dumbbell is 8lbs, so although they're a bit easier to hold it's not heavy enough for most exercises.

And after all this I was using them in a hotel and one of the snouts on a water-filled plate accidentally opened up and gallons of water gushed out onto my hotel bed! Ack! What a mess. I had to hurl myself into the shower with the Aquabells, soaked in water.

Needless to say these went straight onto eBay after that trip!

I highly recommend some resistance tubing and workout cards. Or if you carry a laptop bring some workout DVDs that don't require weights (ab workouts, yoga, non-weighted leg work like Tamilee Webb's "I Want Those" workouts, etc). Make sure you try playing DVDs in your CD-ROM drive before you leave home, most laptops require an extra program to allow you to play DVDs... Your office IT dept should have that program.

Good luck!

RE: I bought Aquabells, didn't like them

I have to agree with Dawn's post. A great friend on this forum was so incredibly sweet to loan these to me when I went to Florida a year ago. My observations to add are: If you plan to be in one place for more than a week, which I was, they will work (although Dawn is correct, they are very tough to hold when all the bells are on the bar). But filling and emptying will get old REAL quick. So if you will be on the move, forget it.

My advise to you would be to get bands and learn how to use them. They would be lightweight and although I am extremely band resistant (I have never used them.....I love the feel of good old cast iron weights) I would pick them up in a second if I was to travel often. After seeing them used in the P90X, they seem to have their merit. (don't get whimpy ones - try them out prior to purchase).
