"Where does the weight go?"

HA! My kids stumped me last night.

They overheard me and BF talking, and they heard me tell him I've lost over 18#s. My younger DS wanted to know what it meant "to lose weight"...so I put it in terms he'd understand. BUT THEN......older DS asked, "where does the weight GO when you lose it?" HA! It would have been easier for me to explain the birds and the bees to him! LOL I was clueless. Short of telling him that the 'waste' from your body goes down the toilet (LITERALLY), I wasn't sure what to tell him.

I told them I'd look it up on the Net.

SOOOOOOOOOOO.....Where Does the Weight Go???

RE:

Well, let's see. Doesn't physics say that matter can be converted to engergy, and vice versa? So tell him that your weight (matter) is being changed into extra energy so that you have more energy to work out!

RE:

Shannon....makes sense. ANd it would be a timely topic, since BOTH my kids are learning about 'matter' right now in their respective classes.

RE:

The theory my co-workers and I have is that weight can never be lost or gained, it can only be transferred. Hence, if you drop a couple pounds, someone, somewhere, will gain it. So Gayle, will you please stop transferring your excess poundage to my thighs?

RE:

Well, one of the Laws of Thermodynamics is that "energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it can only be transformed". So the energy required for exercising and everyday living was obtained by transforming the stored energy on your body, fat. Interesting what we retain from physics. Deb

RE:

Well if you are serious, I think the answer to your question is the weight "goes" by changing the size of your fat cells. You always have the same number of fat cells, they change size and so do you. I believe I learned this in the cathe calendar somewhere. I could be wrong.

RE:

Another comparison they might understand is your car and gas. When your body is heavier it is like a car with a full gas tank. As one exercises and eats right, the body uses and burns the fuel (food and fat) thus loses some of its mass just like the car burns the gasoline in its tank as it's engine runs and this causies the amount of gas in the tank to decrease.

Too bad I can't run the fat out of my body in just a few hours like I can run the gas out of my car. LOL

RE:

Run to Step...I am ABSOLUTELY serious when I asked this question. I knew my kids would INSIST I answer their question! lol

Jean....that's a FANTASTIC analogy that I know they will understand!

OK....Off to reduce the size of my fat cells! lol

RE:

When we say "burn it off" we really burn the fat off ( that provides energy) in the presence of oxygen that we breathe in and the waste is what you breath out, carbon dioxide.

RE:

I personally think we pass it amoungst ourselves! Back and forth.:7

Edit: OOPS, that is what Robin said-only in a much more amusing way.:7

Is Tyler Durden that "Take Home Chef" hunk of a man?:9

RE:

No, Tyler Durden is Brad Pitt's character from Fight Club. He steals bags of fat from liposuction clinics and make high end soap out of it that he sells to department store cosmetic counters for ridiculous prices.;-)
