Where do you work out?

Howdy Annette,
My workout room used to be a double garage. DH built on another double garage complete with a shower room.
My walls are raspberry and the woodwork is purple. On the south wall is my treadmill, TV/vcr boom box on a table with shelves for my videos and music for treadmill workouts. The water softner painted Rebok turqoise and the raspberry painted furnice and water heater. Door to kitchen is turqoise.
My weights on lined up on the floor along with two fully loaded barbells. I have a raised workout area mat, 7x12, made of rubber livestock mats, covered with carpet matting (can't think of the name of that stuff that goes underneath the carpet..hahaha) and then carpet that matches the entire floor, forest green.
The west wall has turqoise door to the outside, a 4 high black chairs around a black high top bistro table, my big screen Tv on a chest that holds by disc player and dvds, a table for DH's coffee maker and supples.
North wall has a turquoise door to the garage, a black recliner chair, coffee table that is filled to capacity with more exercise videos , underneath it a long storage box that holds my ankle weights, tubings, gloves. On top I put all my Ryka's in a row. I have a standing black iron mirror in the corner.
East wall is blank except for two windows.
Ceiling fans are pink with raspberry paddles, and 4 large floresent lights.
It is wild!!! But it is a fun and happy room. It matches my Rebok step box with risers. :p The rest of my house shows a more 'normal' Me. LOL

I have a nice set up in our basement. We have a treadmill, recumbent bike, weights, weight cage so I don't have to life heavy weights over my head, videos, TV & VCR. It is so nice to be able to move around and not really have to pick up after myself (unless we have company).

The old house the living room was my workout area and had to pick up each day and just not enough room.

Another basement gym here. The electronics are: VCR-DVD player, stereo and a sump pump. We also have a bench with a squat rack (finally I can do squats with heavy weights without gettin a hernia to lift the bar up on my shoulders). For cardio we have a treadmill, a Nordictrack, a stationary bike, a stairmaster and a step of course. I love the basement -- or I'd rather say the time I spend there. One day we'll even finish it!

I workout in my basement also, and I don't like the cushy carpet either. I am new to working out at home so I really miss the gym floor.
We are getting ready to build a new house and I already have my basement room tagged, so I am trying to learn about what to put on the floor in that room. I really don't want to spend a fortune, but I really think the soft floor is so much harder to workout on.
Anyone have any ideas what to cover that floor with, other than hardwood?

How about an industrial grade carpet...they are very low pile (although my feet still seem to get "stuck" on them). Or lineolum or vinyl flooring.

I though about vinyl and I think it might work. I also thought about tile so that it could look nice for another type of room, (for resale benefit). I guess short of the "Real Thing", these would be best choice. We all know what concrete does to us, but the gym I went to for 8 years is concrete with, first carpet and then they finally sprung for hardwood over it. I've never been fond of the carpet either, since it really decreases your movement when doing intense step.

My hubby can install any type, so it will be cheaper even if I decide to go with wood. I'm really getting excited about making this room, even more than the rest of the house.(lol) I might be just a little bit addicted to fitness ( so my friends say) lol

Thanks for your ideas. since I am new to home exercise, I think I am going to have to make it pleasant to want to be in it. It will be hard to be motivated without having to go to class at a certain time. But I am tired of paying for a fitness center I don't like, and it's the only one in town!

I don't blame you for being excited! I would be too! There is also Pergo (laminate) type flooring which is supposed to be dent and scuff resistant...although I've also heard that this can be as expensive as real wood, LOL. I like the look of Pergo and will probably go with that when I redo my livingroom.

Hi Annette, don't you just love having a space for yourself? My workout area is about half as big as yours, in our bedroom, right in front of the entertainment center. My step, all my dumbbells and barbell paraphernalia are stored under the bed, and my stability ball is tucked in the corner of our bedroom. I would love to have a larger area with flooring tailor made for aerobics and large mirrors on one wall. Someday, maybe...

We have a 3 bedroom place -- no kids yet, so my DH and I have a "den/TV room" and I have my workout room. I have a TV stand in the closet to save room. I open the closet doors, and there is my TV/VCR?DVD combo, all my tapes/DVD's on a rack, weights, plats, etc. My step fits behind the door. That leaves a whole room of open space, because I tend to move around a lot. :9

Hi Donna
I think you are right about Pergo. My husband just installed hardwood in our kitchen because he said it would cost nearly as much for laminate flooriing as hardwood. The thing I tried to argue with him on was the scratch factor. We have an English Setter in the house! He couldn't be persuaded though. He installed hardwood and I love it! But if you are going to install yourself, the pergo is a little easier, I think. Of course, Milo (the setter) has already scratched it, but they are not deep and since it is light colored, you can't really see them. We just trim his nails quite often!!

I just read Cathe's section on flooring and another alternative to wood is the rubber mat flooring, so I am researching this now.

I've seen Pergo in houses and it really is a pretty floor. Hope you enjoy it!

Basement girl here, too. I have all my weights lined up against the wall and although I wish the TV was bigger (19 incher), it'll do for now! My only complaint is the concrete floor and the ceiling being a little low, but at least I have a place to go that gets me away from a busy household!

Well, there's the other thing...Pergo CAN be scratched but it can't be refinished unless they've changed things since I've looked into it. So in the end your husband was probably right, LOL! :)
