What's the "Teardrop"

Cathlete
I haven't posted on the "Ask Cathe" side of things before, so I first have to thank you for all that you do for us. I am so grateful for your excellent productions, this wonderful website, your "realness" and caring, and your extreme patience with all of us.

Now to the question: In Muscle Max on the static lunges, you make reference to the "teardrop." Sorry to be totally clueless, but what is that? I've been lifting for years, but always at home, so I don't know all the gym terminology.

Thanks,

Carol F

RE: What's the

I'm not Cathe, but I believe she's referring informally to the quad muscles that converge near the knee joint; when these muscles (the rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius and vastus lateralis) are finely massed up and defined they have a "teardrop" appearance just above the knee.

Cathe, I hope I'm right on this. Am I?

RE: What's the

Tunabat -

I'm looking at a diagram of the quads from one of my ACE textbooks as I write this: From what I can see, I think that the "teardrop" is formed by the vastus lateralis (along the outer part of the front of the thigh) and the vastus medialis (along the inner part of the front of the thigh). The rectus femoris (which is a combination quad / knee extensor and hip flexor) originates slightly above the hip joint appears to be superficial, while the vastus intermedius is deeper in relation to the r. femoris - this essentially ride down the center of the thigh bone. All converge at the "patella" - the knee joint, for those interested in the "plain language".

RE: What's the

Holy Teardrop Batman--you guys are cracking me up. Thanks for answering my question AND putting a huge smile on my face. I think I'll go dig out my anatomy textbooks (and see if I can find my husband's German one as well).

Thanks,

RE: What's the

Carol - all you have to remember is this:

"Der tootsiebonenheimer iss connected to der calfbonenheimer,
Der calfbonenheimer iss connected to der tighbonenheimer,
Der Tighbonenheimer iss connected to der buttbonenheimer,
Und der buttbonenheimer iss connected to der couch."
