What's the best way to decrease my resting heart rate?

When I ran in my 20's I had an average RHR of 48. Now I'm 40 and my RHR is about 68. I haven't run in over 10 years and my cardio usually consists of step aerobics, some interval training and some hi-lo, mostly Cathe. Due to the holidays, and my current respiratory infection, I've slacked off on the cardio but plan to pick it up again as soon as I'm better. Should I do more interval training, longer cardio sessions, or shorter ones at a higher intensity? Running is out! I totally burned out on it and have vowed to never do it again! TIA!

I'm not sure exactly what brought mine down, but it's probably a little of all the things you mentioned. Interval training would be my first guess.

Mine was 68/69 when I started working out and now it's between 43-46.

my understanding is the more fit you are.. the lower your RHR... so keep up the cardio and do those intervals!

LOL! Maximus that's hilarious!

This topic has really confused me in the past as my heartrate has always been very fast. Now I know a quick and easy solution! LOL

For those who've had success with interval workouts, besides the IMAX's, which ones did you do and how often?
