What was he thinking?

Okay -- not sure I'm really looking for an answer here but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar encounter. And, perhaps, if one of the men here can give some insight into what on earth this guy at the gym was thinking when he said the following to me:

Guy (talking to me and my workout partner): "Hey, what are you guys working today?"

Me: "Back"

Guy: "Looks like you should work on your abs"

WHAT? I've been walking around since last Thursday thinking I must be the most bloated woman around. I just can't stop wondering what he was thinking? Did I look poochy or something? Was it something I was wearing? Or am I really poochy and just don't realize it? Why do I even care?

This guy knows my (male) workout partner and has talked to us several times at the gym but never something like this. Was he just trying to joke around? Or was he trying to upset me? Or do I really need to work on my bloated ab area? I would never say something like that to someone. Any ideas what was going on in his head?

I agree: being a jerk (actually an "a-hole"!)
Some people just seem to thrive on putting other people down. Makes them feel better somehow.

I think the 'a-hole' thing covers it. Makes me think of what I used to tell me kids about bullying, 'it should never make you feel big to make someone else feel small'.

I know we should let stuff like this roll off of our backs but easier said than done, I hope you can let it go, forget about it and keep up the AWESOME work, you're doing great!!:)

LOL- the guy's a f**king moron. I wouldn't think about it at all. As matter of fact, if it happened to me, I'd "accidently" drop a 20 lbs dumbbell on his foot. }( Don't worry about what he said so much. If I had a quarter for every single thing an idiot say to me, I'd be a billionaire. Just keep doing good. That's more important. :)

Jerk! I would have told him that he's no trip to Hollywood himself, even though it wouldn't be the "mature" approach, it would make me feel better. :7

That guy is obviously an idiot - no matter if he was kidding or not it is totally unacceptable for anyone to say that. I would be tempted to ask him the next time you see him what he meant by that. Then again, you don't want him to think that you gave a crap about him or his comment. So, I guess the best thing to do would just try to let it go and keep up the good work.

The devilish part of me would like to see this scenario the next time you see him...
Ask him "What are you working on today?"
He answers "Abs (or whatever)"
You say "Gee, maybe you should consider a total body workout, or even surgery!" Is that being immature;-)

Hi Shonie,
You don't need a male perspective on this. That was an idiot statement by that guy. He obviously was trying to cut you down and jack his ego at your expense.
In fact, he would have been talking out of his earhole real quick if he'd made that statement to any female workout partner of mine.
Just try to forget it and move on.
T. :)

My guess is: Wanted to cut your male workout partner down but was too wimpy to do it to him directly. Also too dumb to realize you might think he was talking about you. Pathetic.

My gosh Shonie,

What an idiot. You should have looked straight at his crotch and said, "I see you just got out of the pool."

Kickie!! LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is the BEST answer on here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't stop laughing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know, I used to worry when people made rude and insensitive comments like that to me. I always blamed myself for them, somehow. Felt I deserved them, I guess. Nowadays, I very politely but VERY firmly make them explain themselves. I'll say something like, "I'm sorry. I'm not sure I understand what you mean." And I don't back down until they explain. It's usually extremely embarrassing and uncomfortable for them when they have to explain a comment like that, but I'm always so polite and concerned, in both words and tone, and so sincere that they can't make another rude comment to get themselves out of it. It makes people like this accountable for their own actions. Works great.

Shonie,

As many have pointed out, this guy is a jerk. And a major dumba**. Maybe he just has a really bad sense of humor (or no sense of humor at all).

Have you talked to your workout partner about it? Did he notice the rude comment?

Unbelievable. And I'm sure he has the perfect body. What a loser. I'm guessing this guy has a pretty empty life if that's how he relates to people. I mean, who would want to be friends w/someone like that?

Don't forget the best revenge is living well. Think about the good things in your life, & remember that even if there's nothing physical he should work on, beauty comes from the inside & this guy's pretty damn ugly.

Hi Shonie,is it possible maybe it was a miscommunication on his part, what i mean is maybe he was saying that you can get benifits to your back by working the abs and maybe it just came out wrong? I try and give people the benefit of the doubt when things you say could be taken wrong because i have a tendency to stick my foot in my mouth from time to time, now having said that if he says things like that again he is probably a jerk but it may have been a misunderstanding this time, also he could have meant work the abs too so you get a balanced workout and again it didnt come out right,i don' know but it's something to consider. In any case try and let it go,sometimes easier said than done though huh?
