What to eat before a workout?

I've seen posts on what to eat before a workout. But I am concerned about the calorie levels. Some are suggesting 250 calories of pre-workout snacks, followed by 250 calories of post-workout snacks. 500 extra calories just in workout snacks seem high to me.

Is it OK then to keep the pre and post workout snacks to under 100 calories each? (for 200 extra daily cals total). And if so, how many grams of protein and complex carbs are you supposed to be getting for each snack?

I personally don't analyze what I eat that closely. I am not looking to lose weight though so that is partly why. Although I must say that even when I was actively losing weight I just had a calorie goal for the day and as long as I hit that I was not concerned with how many cals were in my pre and post work out foods. I just make sure I am not hungry when beginning a work out and make sure that I eat afterwards. I don't worry about the calories, only that it is nutrient dense food I am choosing.

I think that as long as your body is "happy" with the amount of fuel you are providing it then that is what you should be doing. Everyone is not the same so everyone should not be expected to consume the same amount of calories before or after a work out.
