What to eat a Mexican Restaurant

My husband and I eat out at a little Mexican Restaurant at least once week. This week I've really tried to start watching my diet better (with the exception of the ice cream sandwich I just had). What would be the best thing for me to order when we go there as we we may be going tonight.

shredded chicken tacos on corn soft tortillas with no cheese. So you will just have the shredded chicken, corn tortilla, lettuce, tomato, salsa. :)

It's yummy too!

If you're watching what you eat at home (sans the ice cream sandwich!!), make it your "cheat" meal of the week??? Tortilla soup would be a great starter (any of the soups should be, I would think!)...

Just be sure to avoid the salsa and chips they serve before the meals. Those chips are loaded with fat!

The salsa is okay though.

We have a Mexican restaurant that serves a chicken frajita salad with grilled onions. I ask for it without the sour cream, guac and cheese and have it with salsa for a dressing. It's very tasty.

Chicken tacos are also good - without the sour cream, guac and cheese.

I've had good luck with veggie fajitas (minus the cheese and sour cream) or a grilled chicken/spanish rice type dish. Most places I've been to are willing to handle special requests, so don't be afraid to ask for something prepared according to your healthy eating standard (whether it's low fat, low carb, low salt, etc.) Also, ask if they have a grilled or roasted veggie plate. I've made up entire meals from the side-dish menu: vegetable, rice, salsa, beans, etc.

General restaurant tips - drink lots of water and order the food as spicy as you can handle it. You tend to eat spicy food slower, so you feel full faster.

Or - just kick back and have a small portion of whatever you absolutely LOVE. If going out is a treat, enjoy the heck out of it!! :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. We actually ended up grilling steaks at home, but I'm sure we'll go to the Mexican Restaurant either tomorrow or Saturday. We are hooked on this place. It is a new very small family owned restaurant and it is great.

Kathryn!!! I LOVE chips & salsa!!!!...:)...I get most anything from the veggies menu minus the cheese and sour cream. Where I live Mexican is the easiet way to eat out for my way of eating but I go rarely....:)...carole

I second what Dani said. I order grilled chicken breast fajitas (yes it's that specific or in many states who knows what you get). Corn tortillas not flour. All the salsa you can handle. Lettuce tomatoes & grilled onions & green peppers.

I always have the whole bowl to myself. Everyone else on the table can share another. I love mine very hot & spicy!:9 :9 :9

Marla...I am with you on the hot and spicy salsa! Either added Jalapenos or my fav...Chipotles!!! We make our own...:)...Carole

Carole, any good ideas for dried chipotles? I am usually on the lazy side & buy my salsas but I would like to use these chipotles.

Kelley, sorry to hijack your thread.:)

Do you mean where to get them or how to use them? I got mine online somewhere...:)...to use them I boil water then add usually 2 dried chipotles, take them off the heat, cover and let sit for about 2-3 hours. I use them in salsa, mashed potatoes, various chili's and soups. I'll be happy to give you the salsa recipe, just email me...:)...Carole
