What stores take American Express?

As a thank you for my hard work and extra hours I've been putting in on a huge project at work, my company gave me an American Express gift card. :D You can use it just like an Am Ex credit card but you have to be careful not to exceed the balance.

Well, I wanted to order some neat Fitness by Cathe stuff but they don't take Am Ex. :( I've found some online websites that take it (Collage) but the things I want (weighted vest, weighted gloves) would be expensive because of the shipping. Are there any actual stores that take Am Ex so can go there to make my purchase and not pay shipping? I've never used Am Ex as I'm a Mastercard/Discover girl myself so I've never paid attention to which stores take it and which don't. I found this website but there's not much listed and we don't have a lot of these stores in Wisconsin: http://www.amexnetwork.com/wegotyoucovered/?cid=poc-int-antxtlink-faqs

Suggestions? Anyone?

I think most big retailers take AmEx. Target, Walmart, Kohls, Penny's. If you're looking for sporting good stores, I would think the big chains would take it as well. Dicks, Sports Authority, etc. You could always call before you go.

Katie! That's brilliant!! I can select to have it delivered to a local Walmart and not pay shipping! :) Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Can you tell I'm excited? :D :D :D

Amex

Yeah, I was a bit dissapointed when I realized Cathe didn't take Amex. It's the only major credit card I have and I'm not planning on getting any other cards due to the economy right now. I just don't have $299 to just drop like that.

Oh well, guess it will be a few months before I can get it and I'll just have to save up.

Laura :)

sounds like folks have given you many store options to use your card, so good luck....but just as general info and possibly for next time, (I worked at Amex for many years) if there is a particular store that you would like to accept Amex, contact Amex customer service and ask them how you can get in touch with Merchant Services. explain the situation once you get a merchant services rep and MS will try and wooo them to become an Amex merchant....it was a whole campaign called fight suppression....
Most businesses who don't take amex just don't want to pay the discount % rate, which is higher than visa and mastercard....although for a gift card, that doesn't really apply.

I thought even stores that don't take amex credit cards, would still take the gift card. Although it seems that's not the case as much for online shopping. Either way, I will say, I find both the visa and amex gift cards a pain, you have to know how much is on it, and let the person taking it know, just swiping it, does not give you that total. Also, I found the gift cards difficult to use online if the total amount of the purchase is more than the amount on the card.

They seem to work well at super markets and restaurants. I also saw a guy with a whole stack of them from the holidays, and each one had $50, his purchase was about $200, but the department store could not accept more than 3 cards for one purchase, and then they also can't credit the money back once it's been entered, I was behind this guy for about 15 minutes while they tried to figure it all out.

Amex

Hi Reena,

Yes, there are quite a few options out there that I have already looked into, but Cathe has the best prices with free shipping. So I figure my best route is to save up and pay $20 more for the 4 payment option and use my check card. I'm just trying to get the most for my dollar because I don't have alot of them...lol.

Hi Again,

I did the pre-order payment plan too....makes it hurt less as you pay for it :)
another quick tip just in case - if given the choice, always get amex gift cheques instead of gift cards even though the latter are more popular. Many banks carry these for purchase...you can deposit these like a regular check and get the cash...also if you make a purchase with them you get cash change back if you don't spend the full amount of the gift cheque.....way better than the gift card.....and no fee!

Good Luck!
