Ok, so i teach at a gym, one day a week. Its ok... the people are kinda snotty though (its southern ny ) :)

So i've been teaching a "Butt and Gutt" class and spinning right after it. Well, I am finishing up a week of rest because last time I pushed myself and the class so hard. But get this:

MY BOSS says that the participants want it HARDER. I would drop dead if I made it harder! and, its not safe!!!

I just want to put in my two weeks. I don't want to hurt the participants or myself because of this.

What do you all think? is this just a case of terrible pms? lol :) thanks everyone

I say push 'em so hard one of them drops dead from heart failure. That'll teach 'em}(

You know, what you could do is stand behind the class with a handgun yelling "harder, you dogs!" and occasionally fire a shot into the air. If that doesn't get their heart rates up, you should consider checking to see if they're human.

Oh yeah, and I have PMS too.

You know, maybe it was just one person that said something and your boss generalized to everyone. And perhaps that one person is not practicing correct form. Sometimes if I zone out a bit (which almost NEVER happens - ;-) ) during a workout, I get lazy with my form and I don't squeeze when I'm supposed to and then suddenly it's over and I'm thinking - gee, that wasn't so bad....but I wasn't even doing it right!!

Try giving them reminders on their form and I bet they'll stop complaining!!! Or the handgun.....whichever. :p

Are you talking about the spinning class? At my gym each instructor teaches differently. Some are much tougher and others are so so. We made the same complaint at the gym about the class. The tougher instructor came in and showed us what we should be aiming for and how we should feel by the end of the class. It made such a difference. I personally like it tough, but I don't think I could do that twice a week at the same intensity.

Some people just don't know what they should be aiming for and although it may look like they are doing a tough workout it's pretty easy to cheat and "play" the part. Maybe some of those people made the complaint.

How do you teach? What do incorporate?

thanks for the responses, everyone. here's a typical butt and gut class:

we start warming up with squats and lunges, no weight .

then we go to weights, some people grab a 10# dumbbell, some more or less. we do squats, plie squats, front and rear lunges, kind of ME style. lots of reps, playing with the count.

that usually takes 15 min then we do abs for 15 min. I use alot of cathe's stuff from core max :)

then spinning, which I have been teaching for 4 years (where i used to live) is a series of sprinting, running, climbing. We generally work hard for 3 min to 8 min, then take a 30 sec to one minute break. That's for 45 minutes. I mean, I feel good but feel hard worked by the end of it. That's why I dont know why they are complaining.

:) Thanks again

Tina,

I think your classes sound just perfect the way they are!!! Sounds like you are dealing with some jerks in your class..So give it to them hardcore Cathe style!!!

Here are some suggestions:

When was the last time you changed your music and or rountine in your spinning class??
Maybe you just need to change it up a bit..add some new music, and add in a 4 count jumps for a nice and long 6 minute song...then have them do running sprints right after with only a 15 second break then have them do some standing climbs with sprints worked in....they will be begging for your class to be easier..LOL

For your butt and gut class start out with some plyometrics moves...squat jumps, tuck jumps, air jacks, etc.. warm up then add on some of the same and different plyometric moves at the end of the set of lunges or squats..they will crap their pants!!!

When doing your abs section have everyone grab a 10 lb dumbbell and do those side to side oblique crunches...then have them use the same weight and go down slowly with an 8 count and then back up again for several sets. Then have them do some in and outs..legs off the floor and legs in and out for 25-30 reps etc...Then have them do some Mason twists with the 10 lb dumbells...they will be crying by the time you are done!!

Hope that helps

:)

Hey girl!!!

ROFLMAO!!!!!!! I was wicked when I used to teach my spinning classes..No Mercy I say!! No Mercy!!Bust their humps and they will truly know what a real workout is all about!!

:)

Let me know how it goes as well :)

I have a hard time increasing the intensity of Pilates Mat Classes as well.......you have to stick to the whole philosophy and so adding in ridiculous numbers of reps is out of the question, but I do change up things and modifications and I usually get a few comments after classes that they liked the intensity even though it wasn't really that different :) So good luck to ya!
