What NOT to eat!

Hi healthy eating checkin ers and others!
I'm pleased to say that I'm on the healthier eating path again this week. Fruit, vegetables, whole grains and my favourite, lentils :) YUM!
How is everyone else doing?

I have read quite a lot of posts about how to get the motivation to eat better and I am sure that I have come up with the solution. You see, I've had to prepare for a gastroscopy and colonoscopy, which I had yesterday. You eat a really low fibre diet for a week - no fruit, whole grains, vegetables etc for a whole week - I was recommended cakes, cookies and the like - I even ate a few times at the golden Arches for inspiration (had to take the lettuce and tomato off my bun) - by the end of the week I felt like I imagine that guy on Supersize Me would have felt...AWFUL - I have been craving healthy food for days and finally today my prayers have been answered!

Moral of the story - next time you don't feel motivated to eat right, purposefully spend a day of eating terribly - it will "cure" you immediately.

Has anyone else experienced the same?

Liz N

PS - The solution they make you drink before hand to cleanse your bowel aint pretty either.

Hi Liz!
I am doing good with the healthy eating.Sweets are my downfall so if I can conquer that craving....I can take over the world!!!}( }(
We went to a BBQ last night so my eating was a little off.Not to bad though. There was this spinach/stramberry salad there and boy, was it ever good.I could live off of that stuff for a long time.I think I am going to make one today. That will really help with the healthy eating.
I totally know what you are saying. Some junk food taste soooooo good, that we forget how it will make us feel.I have never spent a day splurging on junk but when I travel my meals are not as they would normally be.I could decide to have something bad for my dinner and then later I may want to have something sweet with a coffee.(Those little coffee places with baked goods ALWAYS get me)By that evening, I will be wishig for the morning to come so I can start a new day.
Lori :)

Liz...I am so glad you have the motivation again! You just never know what it takes to get there and we are all so different. Yes, to answer I have had the bad feeling from eating junk, in fact since I have been following a vegetarian plan, after about 2 weeks of detoxifying my body of all the junk I went to a restaurant for dinner with my family. Ordering food was very tricky as everything has seafood in it which I avoid. I ordered some salad and vegetables thinking that was safe...WRONG!...the vegeys came seemingly soaked in a butter sauce...well, I ate thenm anyway and the next morning my stomach was so upset. I felt crappy until I got something good in my stomach!

I have heard that stuff they make you drink before a colonoscopy is nasty...x( .....Carole

Carole,
that always happens to me - I order something like vegetables which are usually pretty healthy and then they come presented drowning in olive oil and cheese sauce! When I go out to restaurants, I usually order what I please but in a smaller size.

Yeah, the stuff they give you to drink is just terrible!

Cheers,
Liz N

Liz,

Its fascinating that you mention this - this is actually a psychological technique that's called 'prescribing the symptom'. If you force yourself to do it, it feels totally different (i.e. worse) than when you didn't want to but couldn't help yourself or felt that you couldn't change it. So, in addition to it feeling disgusting, making yourself eat this way changes the context of the behavior entirely and its not nearly as 'compelling' as it was before!

Futurefitnessdynamo,

Thanks for your reply! My first experience of this was my brother going away with a mate who ate nothing but meat - by the end of the weekend, my normally meat loving bro' was craving nothing but vegetables.

Incidentally, FFD, I really enjoy your posts - some of them are timely and make a lot of sense to me.

Good luck in your fitness journey,
Liz N

Hi all,

I am so the picture of what not to eat this week! I have so many yummy healthy foods in the house, but I'm not in the mood for them! I understand what you described, Liz. I don't feel nearly as good as I do when I eat well, and I'm almost hoping that the disgusted feeling hits me. I am such a stress eater, and there is a lot of stress here this week. It's such a bad excuse, and I know that even when I'm putting food in my mouth. My sister left home after a fight with my parents last weekend, my mom has been to the dr.'s often for tests about growths on her ovaries, and my poor little Mikey (dog) has conjunctivitis, threw up yesterday, and has massive itchy hives today! Geeez- I should be thankful for my health!

Also, Liz, I've never had to drink the colonoscopy stuff, but I've seen it and smelled it, and boy do I feel for you!

Have a good day everyone! :)
