Glucosamine warning

I tried glucosamine chondroitin and had a bad allergic reaction (hives, etc). Then I found out that it is made from crushed shellfish and the windpipes of cows (kinda gross, huh?). I am vegetarian so I felt bad that I took it before I researched what it was made from. I came across a warning in my reading not to take it if you have a shellfish allergy, which I didn't even know I had since I haven't eaten any meat (incl. fish or chicken) for 20 years!!

glucosamine, et al

Hi, Lora:
I've been using glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM (sulfur) in combination for about six months. I'm lucky in that I have no reaction, and lazy in that although I'm a fish-eating vegetarian, I will sometimes use animal derived medicines. After twenty years of waiting tables and working out on a knee that has no cartilege, I have finally found something that seems to minimize that bone-on-bone pain that I used to feel. This is using 500mg glucosamine, 400mg chondroitin, and 500mg MSM per day. MSM is cheap, but the others are not, so you might want to join a buying club if that's a concern. Good luck.
