What is it about running

Just wanted to add...I am a "daydreamer"...I enjoy getting lost in my thoughts. Thoughts of the past, thoughts of the future, tuning into what is around me. I'm a mama of 2 little angels that are not in school yet so running, and any other steady state cardio (i.e. elliptical) is the only chance I have to get lost in my dreamin'! It gives me time to reflect on the goals I have...the mini goals leading up to bigger goals. It allows me time to reflect on the goals I have reached. It's the **love** of that time that has pushed me into a distance runner! The longer the run, the more time to reflect and dream. I think of it as **getting centered**.

You don't have to be a runner to find that outlet, you can find it elsewhere. All that matters is that you find it.

Hi everybody!
I loved reading this. I too have a hard time running. I wish I could. I know how addicting it can be, "runners high" I am so envious of those who can. I have tried. I heard you get over the hump. I would LOVE to be a runner, but I think I just don't truly understand the dynamics of it, how to breathe. Any suggestions????

I love being outdoors too and taking in the beauty and fresh air. I so get it about letting your mind free and it's like a meditation. So awesome!
What is HIIT? Is it a Cathe workout? It sounds like a good one. I'd like to get some new ones after dd #2 shows up. I don't love weights, but it sound like a good workout......let me know!;-)
Thanks!!

I could never run. I was always awful at it but one day I decided that I was going to do it! I started indoors on a treadmill (much easier on the body!) running only a couple of minutes at a time and built up my endurance gradually.

I initially took an interest in it beause it is supposed to be such an excellent form of exercise that is matched by nothing else...a great fat burner too!

I am also drawn to the idea of racing...I am currently taking a beginners (outdoor) running class and will do a 5k at the end of the class over Labor Day weekend! I am VERY excited about that!

Right now my favorite part of running is the challenge it presents as it is still very new to me...I only began in mid March.:)

I have also just started running seriously. I have found that if I don't focus on speed and just go for length of time than I can get through it. I can do run 5 miles without stopping and my average pace is about 6.8. It took me a couple of months of running4 times a week to get there. I started at 6 mph and just added 1 point up daily. I really like it now. It definitley has become a part of my life. I have to admit though I have to have my mp3 player or it will bore me to death.

Okay, today was my steady state. I managed 30 minutes and that was it. When I slowed down a bit my legs felt like rubber, I ended up finishing at a steep incline. I'm sorry, but it didn't become easier for me after the first 20 minutes. It just felt like it dragged on. Maybe the music is the answer, or it's just something that's not for me. That's okay also, I was just curious what made it so fun for the runners out there. Now I know. I guess we all have to find what works for us and running just may not be for me. I'll find what does and stick with that.

As far as the golden retreivers, we have one also and he is the best thing in the world. We're in the process of getting another, a female this time. Bo is WONDERFUL with our grandson. They are like Mutt and Jeff :7

TY QT!:) DS and my golden are becoming closer and closer "friends" every day. DS has began hugging my dog now...it's soooo cute, I can't stand it! LOL :+ :+ :+ DS is still learning what "NICE" is so he still tends to do things to our dog that look incredibly painful but the dog doesn't even flinch! He has a very high tolerance for pain, this I know, but he's GOT to feel it! He won't even get up and walk away...he just lets DS do whatever he wants!

This has been an enjoyable thread to read. I have never been a consistant runner until this past Februrary. I was of the same opinion as you and Fitnessfreak366. I just hated the pin and boring factor.

In Februrary I deciede to conquer running. I began walking on a treadmill with increasitng speed every minute up until a run and tried to maintain a run for as long as possible. Before long I was clocking in 5.5 miles. When I felt comfortable I began runing after a 5" warm up. Then I took it outside in March. I have been running outside any where from 18-32 miles per week since then! (not as much as the experienced ladies but not bad!)

Sarah and Carole said it well. What ever gets you into a zone is fine. If running doesn't do it for you it is no big deal. I found I could not let my mind wander during a Cathe cardio workout because I would end up injured! I still love Cathe cardio DVD's but running 3-4 times per week has a firm palce in my routine now.

It has become a hobby for me. And it is also the 'next frontier' for me at age 45.

Hi CurlyQtee (and anyone else interested in trying running) -
Alot of people who have tried to run and have "failed" simply have started out trying to go to fast or too far. If you start slowly and ease up gradually you'll be racing miles before you know it and you'll get lean and mean in the process. I would recommend going to www.coolrunning.com and checking out their C25K plan. That stands for couch to 5k and is very doable for anyone. Best of luck to you!
