What is clean eating?

It is the number one most important thing you can do to start on the road to fitness. In laymen's term, it's paying attention to what you eat each and every day and sticking to nutritious, low-fat foods that fuel your body. It's watching the size of your portions, watching your calorie and fat in-take, eating the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, drinking lots of water, and just staying away from the junk. I live by a saying that I read on another forum, and keep it posted in my kitchen on the fridge: "You can exercise til the cows come home, but if you don't clean up your eating you'll just be a cow coming home". (Of course there's a lovely picture of a cow on it, too, to drive the point home.)

Darli, you are a genius! That is the cutest way I have ever heard the clean eating thing described! I agree! Eating lots of fruits and vgetables-I shoot for 7 to 9 each day- and whole grains like brown rice, oats, whole wheat, spelt, barley is the basis for a clean diet. When eaten with those grains, nuts, beans and fish are nutritional powerhouses and satify you so you don't crave sweets and junk carbs. I also avoid trans fat, you know, partially hydrogenated oils. I love olive oil and that new Spectrum spread which is made with canola oil, a heart healthy monounsaturated oil, is pretty good. I eat very sensibly but I splurge occasionally and when I do I make sure it's something worth the calorie expenditure. I eat clean at least 80 percent of the time and eat slowly and savour each bite when I do indulge!
