I believe it helps amongst other things to regulate your metabolism (many people claim to have a overactive or under active thyroid to explain there weight problems but those who do suffer from it can have additional problems and in some cases my have to have medication).
Depending on how 'elevated' it is and if you need to do anything about it is for you and your doctor to decide.
Here in the UK you can have an overactive (which means that you have low body fat and sometimes slightly prominent eyes) or underactive (where you may gain fat).
The thing is the either way the weight gain or loss is highly unnatural and can happen suddenly and dramatically. It can be regulated in both instances with medication a friend of mine is on steriods for her condition.
