Christine, is it a bike race or a bike tour or something else? My DH does the Century in NYC every year, and there are more folks who look like him than there are athletic-looking types. He's in his late fifties and *ahem* rather overweight. He fits right in. But maybe that's more of a bike tour than the thing you're doing? I don't know much about cycling because my knees don't care for it.
