What do you get checked in a physical exam? (I assume that you they only check for certain things, not everything.)

reflex check
weigh in/blood pressure (although this is general)
check ears
check tonsils
feel around the neck
feel around abdomen-make sure nothings tender
looks more into your chart about previous complaints
asks a bunch of questions like do you have any new moles, how's your energy, are you sleeping ok, are you having any pain, etc.
they allow more time for this visit to allow you and him/her to ask questions and answer concerns
My doc also does breast exam and pap test
bloodwork/urinalysis

I'm sure I'm leaving something out, maybe someone can add to this

Yes, mine checks cholesterol as part of blood work.:)

I go to a cardiologist so he orders a chest xray and a doppler of the heart and carrotid artery as well...

What gets checked in a physical varies depending on age and if you have any problems or complaints. For most this includes a full head to toe check over(including pap and breast exam), blood work, and urinalysis.

The blood work shows (among other things) cholesterol level (total, bad, good) and triglyceride levels. I think that in a great part due to exercise, mind are all in the excellent range (yes a little bragging, but we all work hard, right);-)

My physical includes in addition to all that mentioned above, a flu shot, I usually get my ears cleaned:) and any particular problem that I am having. Like this last one my doc was/is really concerned about my knee;( .

I am concerned about cholesterol levels because, even though I exercise and eat healthy, I have this little...I don't know the word in English, it is not "warts", but accumulations of fat around my eyes and someone told me that is a sign of high cholesterol.

I don't know about those fat deposits and cholesterol levels (which, by the way, you can have the results back in a matter of a couple of hours), but as we age, the skin around our eyes becomes less elastic and the fat just kind of falls in there! Don't know how old you are, but that could be causing it, too. By the way, what language do you speak? I speak Spanish and English, perhaps I can help you find the word you want!

I think you may be referring to "Xanthelasma". These are flat, slightly raised, irregularly shaped, yellowish lesions around the eye that represent deposits of lipids and MAY suggest an abnormality of lipid metabolism. Do they look similar to this?

lala1, thank you for your reply. I speak English and Spanish too.
The word I would use in Spanish would be "verrugas" or "verruguitas", pero son acumulaciones de grasa, como tu dices, NO verrugas de esas que se quitan con compound w.

I am 27 years old, but I have those "verrugas" around my eyes since I was about ten years old.

Mariela,

I have heard and read them described as whitish, yellowish, etc. Be sure you tell the person completing the physical exam that you are concerned. Let us know how it goes.

Thank you. I'll let you know about the xanthelasma. I am also going to get a referral for the oftalmologist. I have high intraocular pressure and my eyes -and head- have been hurting lately.

I check my dignity at the door. I hate the pap smear, but thanks for reminding me I need to do it this month. Sigh...

Jeanette, I know that feeling! LOL I got a PAP last week. The doctor (a male) was more nervous than I was. I was just saying to myself: "Please, don't laugh"...from embarrasment, that is.
