What do you eat between meals?

I'm looking for ideas..... lots of ideas. What do you guys eat as healthy snacks between breakfast, lunch and dinner?

thanks,
S.

Let's see...

Banana with PB
Whole Grain crackers with PB
yogurt with apple
walnuts with apple
apples with PB
low carb protein shake with apple/banana

That's a tough one. I try to eat healthy snacks... like homemade bread with a thin spreading of pb, asian pear with cottage cheeze, a bowl of oatmeal, salad with apple slices, etc. But I've got salty chip-like snacks for the kids, and it's hard to resist. Soon as the kids are off to college... those snacks will not be in my house!

Lara bars
Apple or pear
Vega bars
Glass of chocolate soy or rice milk (or, now, homemade nut milk)
Smoothie (Vega, Nutiva hemp)
Cut veggies with hummus
Celery sticks 'stuffed' with mock 'chicken' salad (made with garbanzos or tempeh)

I eat fruits, fat free plain yogurt with frozen cherries, apple with nuts or cheese. Sometimes fat free milk. That's about all. This makes me feel very limited. I need snacks with more protein.

Well lets see,,it all depends on what I'am in the mood for...

trail mix*Good Sense* is good and low in sodium
raisons/dried fruit
handfull of nuts
necturines/grapes/oranges/grapefruits/apples/bananas/berries
unsalted crackers w/PB
rice cakes w/Pb
smoothies
granola bar
half a sandwich or deli meat(if I dont want the bread)
"sometimes" I'll buy those hundred calorie snacks packs
salad w/lite dressing

and for those sweet tooths, smart ones desserts or no pudge brownies(I make single servings and OHHHH soooo gooood!!)

thats All I can think of right now!
take care
Amy:)

My snacks are usually between 100-150 cals each (mostly 100, but there are some days that I need a bit more). I normally eat snacks to fill nutrition gaps. For example if I didn't have enough calcium during breakfast then a good choice for a snack is yogurt with some nuts (like almonds; my all time fave). I like fresh fruit, yogurt, soy milk, peanut butter, oatmeal cookies, fresh nuts (no salt or sugar added) and things like that. I even eat organic baby food sometimes (those tropical fruit and banana blueberry thingies are awesome :9). You've gotten great suggestions already!

Thanks for starting this thread. I am interested to find some new snacks. Here are some things I do

apple w/ PB
banana w/ PB
luna bars (not too often, but they do satisfy sweet cravings)
soy milk
cheese
clementines
red peppers and zucchini with hummus or homemade dip
yogurt

Karin

Cottage cheese w/pineapple
Ezekiel bread/peanut butter(sometimes sliced banana on top)
Activa yogurt w/fresh fruit mixed in
Handful almonds or cashews
Orange or grapefruit

just came back from the market. Spent ridiculously long time there searching for great snacks. Looking for some protein bar but just found out the we get more than enough protein in American diet. ???? And protein drinks or protein supplements will give us an unbalanced something.

It took me a long time to look through things because I try not to buy anything with sweeteners or high fructose corn syrup and whatever that we are not supposed to knowingly eat :)

After all this time up and down the aisles I finally found something I might like. Quaker Multigrain Minis : Cinnamon Sugar. 60 cal per serving (9 cakes) and no milk (lactose intorerant).

The problem is I decided to spread some PB on them (210 cal per 2 TBS)

Please let me know if you think there is something sinister in this one.

Here is my thought on that:
I think that most people do eat too much protein. But, I also think that most americans are eating fast food and restraunt meals often...which have HUGE portions of meat which will give a lot of protein! For those of us that are working out with weights and cardio, we need the protein. I eat a very balanced diet. 40/30/30 ratio and I use protein powder daily. I find it hard to get in 120ish grams of protein per day without it. Once I stop losing, I will up my protein so that I can actually GAIN muscle instead of trying to lose and hold onto muscle.

Just my thoughts!

Hi Jessica,

What protein powder do you use?

Fresh fruit
Mini carrots dipped in diet Ranch dressing
Small bowl of Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal
Yoplait Lite vanilla yogurt with frozen (unsweetened) berries mixed in
String cheese
V8 Diet Splash Tropical Blend
Pretzles - kinda bad, but better than chips

>I need snacks with more protein.<

Me too. I try not to waste my calories on snacks that won't stay with me long. I tend to snack on higher fiber fruits (apples, berries, cantaloupe, peaches, pears, oranges), nuts, the occasional protein or snack bar, Dannon Light 'n Fit yogurt or the Fage greek yogurt from Trader Joes, hummus, peanut butter, raw veggies. Today my snacks are an apple w/ yogurt, soy and flaxseed corn tortillas from Trader Joe's w/ 1 T. hummus, and a piece of Oats & Buttermilk snack cake (I modified the recipe that was posted on here earlier to reduce the sugar and use whole grain flours).

If you're eating a fairly varied diet, and not subsisting on processed/junk food or fruits, then it's pretty much impossible to not get enough protein if you are eating enough calories to survive. Studies have proven this.

Human milk only contains 5% protein, and it is our only nourishment (if we are fed naturally) at the time when we are growing the fastest. The RDA for protein, set by the American Dietetic Association, is only about 10-15%, and that is with a large safety margin. The WHO recommendations are lower, and also contain a large safety margin.

Excess protein (especially animal protein, which contains more sulphur-containing amino acids, which are more acidifying) can affect the immune system (as per Andrew Weil) and cause the body to either not absorb alkaline minerals or leach them from their 'storage' in bones
