What do you do instead of eat?

Instead of eating??? Well........... I uh.............think about what I'm going to eat next when I do get to eat again! SERIOUS as a heart attack! I actually watch the Food Network and live vicariously thru them!

This is going to sound really weird (or obsessed), but I actually think WWCD (what would Cathe do)? Would Cathe eat this entire bag of M & M's? I think not. And how would she look at me if she saw me eating them? That helps me sometimes. I'm a freak. I know.:+

I love this thread. You guys are too funny! And Nancy, you hussy, you! Eating kidney beans!! How could you! :+

As for what I do -
First off, I make it an absolute NO NO to go to the grocery store hungry. Even if it means buying an apple or getting a salad at the salad bar and eating it before I start shopping. That makes it some what easier to resist bad foods. Then I only shop the perimeter of the store, produce, meats, dairy and out. Or I'll stop somewhere that doesn't offer the bad stuff, like a farm stand or gas station or drug store (we can get milk in our drug store, I just avoid the candy aisle).

At home or in the store, if I'm tempted, I read the nutrition label, that's almost always enough to make me say never mind. All I need to see is 23g of fat and I'm like "Forget it".

And if I'm STILL tempted, I get busy. I absolutely must stay out of the kitchen and all stores if I'm suffering from a serious craving. I do something that makes it impossible to eat - take a shower, go out for a walk, weed the garden, clean the basement/attic/garage, anything that gets my hands dirty or wet.

And, I must admit, sometimes even that doesn't work and I just have to go to bed. Most of my cravings are at night so that works best.

Good luck!!!

Claude

Oh my too Claude!! I'll think about getting something, then read the label and suddenly the food will lose ALL of it's appeal. I'll just picture 23 grams of fat flooding into my bloodstream and the image will make me a bit queasy. Are we weird??

lol! I don't have any really good suggestions because I am that way, too. One thing I try is this: I think how awful it would be to see my butt on a news special on overweight americans. You know, when your watching the news and they come on about how overweight we are all getting and then video people's big butts as they walk down the street? I always think it would be so horrific to be watching TV with the family and have someone say "Hey, isn't that you, mom, in the black pants?"

If you are in the store, immediately go to another section and buy yourself some other treat to enjoy later - a magazine, book, bubble bath, soap, nailpolish etc. Unfortunately, I usually pick up a fitness mag. and then go back and get the donut.:+

No Nancy, we are not weird! If we just keep telling ourselves that, we may one day believe it! :p

What a fun, interesting thread.

For those trips home from work, Robin, I suggest you keep something healthy in your car or bag, and eat it before you enter the store.

I sometimes bring a sandwich bag full of baby carrots and slices of red pepper with me when I grocery shop. It takes a long time of munching to get through the whole bag, and makes it much easier to get through my list without adding in the junk food.

Cheers,
Sandra
