WHAT did I do??

I was working out to Low Max and was on segment2? slap claps and when I stepped back w/ my right foot I heard a big pop and felt something snap in my calf. It hurts, I can't put weight on it. Yikes!

That happened to me a few years ago doing Step Blast. I pulled my calf muscle. You really should see someone about it though.

I called my primary and have an appt for tomorrow morning. If I ice, rest and elevate, do you think it is OK to wait until then? Would it be a torn ligament or something like that? What is recovery time for a pulled muscle? I don't know much about sports injuries. I am worried about being sidelined. I lost 40 pounds about a year ago and working out helps me to stay healthy and sane about food. (not give in to the junk food monster lurking inside)
Thanks

Jody, I am so sorry! I totally agree about you getting it checked but wanted to let you know I had this happen once (was there a burning sensation with it?) I was fine the next day...not sure if I just over-stretched something? Good Luck and keep us posted.

When touching the back of your leg, do you feel any bumps or lumps?

You more than likely tore the tendon that connects your calf muscle (gastrocnemius) to your ankle bone. Depending on how bad the tear is will determine your recovery time. Complete tears require surgical intervention, but don't get to ahead of yourself, it may not even be a tendon tear.

I think it can wait until tomorrow morning. If you begin to feel really anxious about it though, do go to urgent care. Only you know your own body.

I hope all goes well.

No bumps or lumps and really no swelling. After rest and elevation, just a mild to moderate burning feeling, not throbbing. Increased pain when I pull my toes up toward my ankle. I will lay low today and keep appt tomorrow unless I feel "all better". Thanks for the feedback. :) I will let you all know what happens.

Just a follow up. I felt better today. I saw my primary. She really couldn't tell much, just agreed that it was a torn/strained/pulled calf muscle. I have no pain unless I torque in a certain way at which time I have significant searing pain so I am limping dramatically to avoid that position. I am still doing rest and elevation and ice but also homeopathic ointments and tablets.
I suspect I will be out of commision as far as working out for a while. Limecat/shelly, how long were you hurt?

So here is my positive spin, this is an opportunity for me to clean up my eating. I have been getting away with eating junk/cheating because I work out. So time to pony up and get back on track.
Thanks for the feedback yesterday.
Smiles,

Jody:

You ruptured your plantaris. I did this exact same thing over a year ago, then did it again and again in a series about six months ago. It is a very small, pencil-like muscle that is evolving out of our bodies, but hasn't quite completed leaving the building.

Actually, I believe this is the same injury (the first one) that sidelined Cathe from filming the new videos.

I just did SPC last week, and it was the first step workout I have done for four months. And I didn't pop the plantaris, so am hoping that it finally healed enough to slowly start doing step again. Look it up on the internet and you will see that it happens as you are stepping back and down off of a surface (step, in our case).

Hi Charlotte,

I did a web search and I think I agree. Thanks for the info.

I didn't have much swelling and I am getting around better all the time as long as I don't step a certain way (I can't let the injured leg get behind me when I walk and I use care when stepping forward on that leg).

What cardio, if any, were you able to do while healing? Six months w/o step? Grooooaaaaannnnn x(

I know - it's one of the only times when it feels good to wear heels because it prevents you from stretching out the calf! I did plenty of kickboxing and weight tapes. As long as I was careful and didn't do anything that remotely resembled stepping down and back, I was able to get through the workouts without exacerbating.
