What benefits does this have ?......

Hi All,

Just wondering - what benefits does one gain by holding a barbell across the shoulders ? Is it adding resistance in leg squats ?

Many Thanks

Anna

Anna,

You are right, holding a barbell acrossed your shoulders is another way to add resistance for lower body exercises like squats, lunges, good mornings, etc.... Holding the weight in this way also challenges your core muscles because you have to balance and stabilize that weight through your range of motion.

Of course they'll work the glutes to perfection, on step ups, lunges, squats and plie squats.

But, remember that if you don't have a barbell, dumbells held on youur shoulders will do the same job for you! I don't yet have a barbell and am sucessfully honing my glutes with two 20 pound dumbells for all of the above exercises...

Do you have a series of different dumbell sizes? Since you have just bought MIS!!! You'll be needing them, a range from 5 pounds upwards....

And congrats on your Rhythmic Step and Power Hour purchses: these two are my staples and have kept me going with Cathe in "dificult periods" of de-motivation, whatever.

Knew you'd love the music!!!!

As far as your "plates of meat" are concerned, have you tried Reebok trainers? When I lived in London, this is what I used and I found that they actally came large on the foot, my feet (size 6) were lost in them. They have loads of new cool styles, try their website and see....

Anna, I have just bought the CTX series, and I remember from another post you were saying you were thinking of getting it in January. I was doubtful at first that the cardio sessions would be long enough, and I am now hooked! I think it would be great for you. The music is different, some of it is great and very motivating. The range of different aerobic styles, sometimes on one video, is great, and you can do things like: just do the one cardio session and then follow it with Power Hour or MIS if you want to work more than the one body part; or you can combine two aerobic sessions for a really explosive workout. I did that last night and it worked me hard, my legs are still tired... So you see there are so many options. get this series!!!!

Hi Clare,

At the moment I am still a weakling, and find at the moment, lifting 3# dumbells are just right, though I keep throwing in my 4# handweights to challenge me ! I have just bought an 8 lb body bar to get me used to lifting a long thing like a barbell, which I will use across my shoulders. Though I do intend to invest in another set of 3 dumbells which are the next step up (5#, etc).

The music in Rhythmic Step is wicked !!!!!!!! I love it - I can see why it is motivational :)

I am glad you are enjoying the CTX series, I am still definitely ordering it in January, as it looks brilliant !!! The length of the workouts are good, and I am hoping to be able to fit some workouts in during the day - the children won't mind me doing that for 30 - 40 minutes !

I shall have a look at Reebok trainers, I never thought about them. I hate looking for trainers here, as the staff in sports shops don't seem to offer very good advice :-hmmm !

Anna :)

Hi Anna,

Just wanted to tell you not to worry about being a "weakling." I can't believe how fast it's possible to progress. Oh, it doesn't seem like it at the time, but when you look back, you'll be amazed at your progress.

I just added weights to supplement my bike riding early this spring. I played around with them a little before but didn't get serious until recently. When my son and I started lifting, we couldn't even get through an entire 20-minute Kathy Smith "Lift Weights to Lose Weight" tape--with no weights! But by fall, we were lifting with Cathe, my son was ready for football season, and I've had to add 12, 15, 20, and 40 pound dumbbells to my basic set. I can lift weights over my head, now, that I could barely get off the ground a year ago! It's actually pretty incredible!

So you just keep going. It'll seem like you're moving ahead by baby steps, but you'll be amazed at what you'll be able to do a year from now! And let us know how you're doing. It's inspiring.
