Weird Back Pain

OK, those of you who know me know that I have lots of little weird health issues...and I apologize for mentioning yet another one.

This time it's very sharp back pain. I used to have this years ago and it's started again. It's not like DOMS. It's a sharp stabbing shooting pain that sometimes feels like it wraps all the way around to my chest in front. When I had this before they did X-rays and EKGs or what-not and couldn't figure out anything in particular. There was nothing evident in the X-rays and my heart was fine. Sometimes shifting position will help a bit, but not always. I can't figure out why some days it hits me. I'm a little worried about tomorrow's workout (4DS HIS) since I'll be doing back work, but like I said it's not a feeling like DOMS so maybe it won't affect it.

Anyway, all this rambling on just to ask, has anyone else had this kind of odd upper back pain?

Its your large chest I bet! I get that same dang thing, and my chiropractor told me its cause could be the size of my chest. It feels like a rib is kinda being pushed or something into your chest? From around your upper back?

Go get adjusted, I have a very unflexible back anyway making back exercises really hard-the pulling ones especially. Seriously, I bet that is what it could be.:)

I also like the chiro idea. Another thought, could the pain be some sort of muscle spasm?

To make a long story short, I tweaked my shoulder last fall, and in compensating for that pain I ended up getting horrible stabbing muscle spasms right around one side of my rib cage. My chiro and occupational therapist helped me with it - some adjusting, lots of myofascial(sp) massage, some trigger point massage, stretching, and I ended up buying a foam roller which has been great.

Thanks for the advice. It's weird how it just comes on certain days and really hurts (I mean MAJOR stabbing pain) and then other days (like today) I'm fine. I even did the chest & back work from 4DS HIS without trouble today.

Tneah, I don't know if my chest is big enough for that. Now my sister used to have a HUGE HUGE chest--so big she ended up getting a reduction and then teased me about mine being bigger (which it's not except in letter--she's still a bigger number). Still, something to consider--it is that part of the back just the other side of my chest.

As for the muscle spasm--maybe. What it kind of reminds me of is when I'd get sciatica pain down my butt and leg during pregnancy--it's similar to that pain.

I will think about going to the chiropractor soon, but I have so many appointments lately (physical therapy, dermatologist, dentist, orthodontist, etc.) Ugh. I'm sure if this happens more often (the way it did a few years ago, I'll go ahead and go--I think there's an office walking distance from here, in fact.

Lanie, I second, third, fourth the chiro option. In fact I'm leaving for my chiro in just a few minutes for *the same exact pain*! I've been feeling very winded duiring cardio (very unusual for me) and sure enough today I have a stabbing pain from my shoulder to my chest and it hurts more with a big deep breath.

Don't let this go too long or you'll get some wicked headaches too!

Good luck!

I fifth the chiropractor. I have lower back pain which admittedly is different from your symptoms, but last week I blew out my back doing ab work, went to the chiro and was like new by the end of the day.
