Weighted Vests and Leg Work

Anyone out there use a weighted vest for legwork and how do you incorporate this in your routine? Can you still use a barbell with it or do you usually use the dumbbells? I can't afford a contraption with a squat rack yet? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I use an All Pro weight vest for my leg work in addition to a barbell for squats, plie squats and lunges, and I really swear by it. I don't have the dough or the space at home for a squat rack, so the weight vest is a great alternative. I only use a barbell for leg work, no dumbbells, but that's just a personal preference; if you like doing dumbbell work with the weight vest that's fine too.

I wouldn't recommend wearing a weight vest if you're doing a cardio-leg-circuit routine, but certainly for stand-alone leg strengthening it's great.

There are a few brands out there. As I've mentioned, I have the All Pro brand, which is adjustable up to 40 lbs. Caution on that one: it's very clumsy for shorter exercisers (like me) because it's a tad long, and can feel like an iron pup tent on you. I believe there are other brands that are more form-fitting. Also, be advised that weight vests REALLY hold your core heat in, and you generate a ton of heat when you're doing leg work. This is no small issue in hot/humid weather.

Check out your local SportMart, or online at Fitness Wholesale, Perform Better, Power Systems, and/or Fitness First.

I decided that 45# is the max I want to lift over my head, so to go heavier, I use a weighted vest (or to got LOTS heavier, I do squats on my Rockit machine). I use the vest with a barbell. I just make sure when I write down the weights I'm going to be using for a workout (which I always do as preparation for my weight workouts), I factor in the vest weight. So if my vest is set up at 15#, I will write "50# = 15 + 35" so I know what to set the barbell at.

ETA: I got my vest through the Reebox online store, when they had a free shipping deal. It's made by Ironwear, which is the same company that made my ankle weights (which can be used as thigh weights, or linked togethet to make a belt) and weighted gloves, and the weights (heavy rubber that is flexible and comfortable rather than hard metal) fit in both my ankle weights/belt and the vest.

I recall Kathryn giving that advice a long time ago for the weighted vests & I plan to still give it a try. I just thought they were so expensive. But now, I'll have to give in. I'll give you feedback afterwards. Wish me luck. ;)

Thank you everyone for your replies and your help. Thanks guys I'll check around for a good fitting one. I'm just at the point where I really need to add some more weight to get an effective leg workout. If I'm not trying to do lots of reps. So I'll try the weight vest.
