Weight Varying During the Day?

I'm one of those compulsive people who weigh themselves every day. Sometimes several times a day. Well for the last several days my weight has been varying a lot during the day. For example, I weighed 143 last night and woke up this morning weighed myself and was 140. I weighed myself during the day and was still 140. Now I'm at 142. What is going on? I've eaten very clean for the past few days. Is this water retention? It's not TTOTM. Or the scale screwy?

First of all, if you must weigh yourself everyday, just do it first thing in the morning. I read that your weight can vary up to 8 pounds in one day considering what clothing you have on, whether or not you have eaten, and if your bladder is full.

I used to be one of those every-day weighers, and now do it only once a week. That is plenty, believe me. You are doing yourself no favors by being so hooked to weighing yourself.

Just Do It! :)

I second Honeybunch1's emotion. Your scale weight can fluctuate significantly during the day, week and month, and it has nothing to do with fat storage increases or decreases. Once every week or two is plenty, if you feel you need to weigh yourself at all.

I too used to weigh myself every day, like you sometimes several times a day. Those were the times when I was either in the throes of bulemia nervosa (late teens / early '20's) or flirting with anorexia nervosa (late '20's). It can be a self-torture phenom.

I've learned not to weigh myself at any time other than first thing in the morning. Otherwise I get depressed because I have definitely noticed a fluctuation of up to 5 lbs during the day!!

I weight myself pretty frequently, but I always do it first thing in the morning, and I only RECORD my weight officially once a week.

I really can't add anymore to what's already been said, they are right. Once/week first thing in the morning before you eat/drink anything, and if possible, after you've eliminated "waste." (really no good way to phrase that!)

But just to show yourself how your weight can change during the day without being fat accumulation, next time you weigh yourself in the morning on that empty stomach and record your weight, drink a glass of water and get back on the scale. My digital scale can show 0.5 or 1lb depending on how much water I downed. That's how I broke myself from constantly checking my weight.

Well, clearly, you MUST have eaten 2 pounds of pure fat at your last meal!!! (Sorry, could not resist!:)

JenniferAnn, correct me if I am wrong, but are you not petite?? I thought I remembered in another post you saying you were short with big calves??

Just wondering because if you are short, you are the first one around here to weigh close to what I weigh...??????

Hi Jenniferann

Your an inch taller than me and 3lbs lighter. All I can say is that yes your weight changes thoroughout the day if you notice with most diet programmes i.e. weight watchers suggest weighing yourself 1 time per week on the same day and time it gives a more accurate picture.

Remember so try and break this habit like with eating when your not hungry when you are tempted to go on the scale make yourself wait for ten minutes say until the urge goes. Why not try putting the scale somewhere where it would be hard to reach or difficult to get to if you have a scale at work or in your office get rid of it.

My 2 cents
