Weight Training for 1/2 marathon/Which rotation to use?

Is there a good rotation to use that would complement my training for a 1/2 marathon? It is in 12 weeks.

Obviously, I am not Cathe. However, Hal Higdon has great training grograms for all levels of runners. Here is the link for the half:

I've used his programs just to get back into running after my second baby, but I have not run a half yet. My husband ran a half back in the spring and did not lift weights - just ran. I also have two friends training for the Chicago marathon, and neither of them are lifting weights. One of them usually does, but not when she is training. She just rides the bike on cross-training days.

I have seen the website thank you very much. I am curious what strength training DVD'd to use to complement the running program. Any suggestions?

Wow, I haven't posted here in ages, but I too am curious about what strength training workouts would compliment the running. I've heard conflicting suggestions in running magazines. Some say not to strength train, some say not to stretch, some say the opposite. Big sigh!

I love to do Cathe's lower body workouts but now I wonder if they compliment the running or not. Especially since I tend to build muscle pretty quickly. Would gaining muscle slow down my running speed? Then again, would it help prevent injury, especially shin splints? It's all so confusing!

I would love to hear some suggestions on this question.

I think you need the strength work to prevent injury & keep your general health at par, but I have no idea exactly what you would do...BUMP!

Hi Ladies,

I asked the same question to Cathe a few months ago and she recommended Supersets and Push Pull to complement my runnig.
I'm a marahton runner and it has help tremendously.

Here is my rotation:

M - PP
T - run 6 miles
w - SS
Th- run 8 miles
F - rest
Sa- PP/run 8 mils
Su- Long run varies from 12-16 miles

M - SS and so on.

I don't know about half-Marys but for a 10 K beginner it was still difficult trying to fit in a lower body strength training day. I remember struggling with the schedule and DOMS before a training run if I tried to do a heavy lower body routine. Until I tried PP. What worked for me was the one set lower body and 2 set UB PP routine. It was just right.
