Weight loss check-in

Steppingup

Cathlete
Hi everyone!!!! My week has been good but the scale (I know we are not to dwell on the numbers but I can't help it sometimes) has not budged. I feel good and strong though. My running went fairly well last week and I feel my indurance has increase somewhat but afterall it has only been one week. I just did Rhythmic Step and boy what a workout. It was really fun and I sweated quite a bit. I have done well with my eating except for yesterday but I usually allow one day on the weekend to splurge a little. If it will quit raining here maybe I can run again sometime this week. I am aiming at 2x per week for now.

Anyway, how is everyone doing? Let me hear from you!!!

Kelly

Hi Kelly

Sounds like you are off to a good start. It is so hot here today I don't feel much like eating anyway. I was going to get a two mile trot in this morning but was running late so did a warmup on my stationary bike and legs and arms on MIS. It felt good and am anxious to get my new bar so I can do it properly.

Did well on my eating too by taking the good stuff to work. I like to eat about every three hours...and dinner was oysters and crackers and strawberries...just too hot to cook. The only junk was a small bag of chips midafternoon...that is my red light time...I get bored or sleepy and the vending machine calls me...today it was salt...but better than chocolate which gives me a rush then sends me plummeting again.

So, all in all a good day.

I have the same problem around 2 to 4 o'clock. I want to eat something, anything. If I can make past that time then I am okay. I also like to eat every three hours or I get a sluggish kind of feeling. Sounds like you are doing well. It's hot here to and it just about makes breathing unbearable.

Keep up the good work!!!!

Kelly

Hi, all...I lost 3 lbs. but I don't think I weighed last week at all so that is probably a two week loss.
I agree with everyone else...it is so hot & humid here, the air actually feels "thick" & hard to breathe. Doesn't help my cardio any!
It does keep your appetite down, though. I only want light foods, nothing heavy. So I guess that's the silver lining in this cloud.
Keep up the good work ladies,
Ruth :)

Great job Ruth...I will take 3# anyday. I was weighing every day for awhile...just to monitor my eating habits. I had gained a lot of weight last year due to stress and hadn't been paying attention. Of course, we gain it one pound at a time and it creeps up slowly. So, will probably go back to once a week now that I am exercising regularly...it is more encouraging seeing a 2# weight loss once a week or every other.

Take care.

Kathleen

Hi everybody,
Kelly, I didnt' weigh myself this week cuz I have a hunch that like you, I won't see any lost pounds....although my eating has been quite good and workouts have been terrific. I also take a free day once per week. It is hard not to see the pounds drop each week, but we've gotta just hang in there and keep doing the right stuff, and it'll happen:).
Ruth, great job on the 3 lbs!! Woo hooo!!!
Kathleen, I also eat every 3 hrs. or so. I find if my meals are balanced, then this is when I naturally get hungry for my next meal. If I am not eating balanced meals, I get hungry sooner.
Keep up the good work!!!
Deb

Ruth, great job on the 3 pounds. I know it is so encouraging to see the scale number go down or to see any changes in our body for that matter. You're doing a wonderful. Keep it up!!!!

Deb, thanks for the encouragement. It is kind of upsetting sometimes when you work sooooo hard and nothing seems to happen. I know we are doing this for the health benefits also but we want to look nice to. We want people to look at us and say, "Wow, I can tell she works out". Is that so terrible? Anyway, like you say, it will happen!!!! I have never been in such good shape before in my life and that makes me happy!!!

Kelly

HI All

Congratulations to those who lost #'s and those who may
not have seen a difference in the scale but are definitely
making a difference in fitness. I desperately want to lose
this 60lbs but more and more I appreciate the fun and other benefits of working out.

I lost 1lb, but a greater accomplishment was doing Step Heat last night. I was able raise my step height from 4" to 6" up to the end of the 1st section and completed the whole tape w/energy to spare at the end! Yipee. I used to have to modify and struggle thru this one so I'm feeling pretty cool right now....heee heeeee!

Hi all!

Ruth--congrats on the 3 pounds! That is good news.
Crystal--good job on the pound. Keep up the good work.

I have a question for ya'll...I just moved in with my S.O. and we have a scale that is ok, but I am used to a digital scale that stayed at my parent's house. What type of scale does everyone have? I'm also not sure how to make certain that the scale is accurate?! There is almost a 5 pound difference between the digital and the analog. Any suggestions/comments? Maybe I should just throw the scale away! Thanks,

Cruncholi

Probably the best thing for all of us would be to throw our scales away but we all know that is not going to happen. I have a digital scale that is as accurate as the one at my doctor's office. Do any of you move your body just right when you are weighing to get the lowest reading. I lean this way and that way and forward and back and try to suck in and....anyway, I'm pathetic so I'm probably the only one. I just hate having extra weight on me as you can probably tell. Oh well, did I actually answer you question Cruncholi?

Crystal, great job on the one pound but more importantly on being able to get through Step Heat and raise your step. It always makes me feel great to get through a tape that I couldn't originally.

Everyone is doing a great job!!!!!!

Kelly

Hello everybody!
High fives to everyone that lost weight this past week and also to those who moved their buns...not the pastry kind either:) I can relate to all your complaints about the heat and humidity, so I've been getting up before 6am to go for a walk. This morning was delicious, 67 degrees only...aahhhh

Anyhow, I'm going to share my stats with you all because I think that when I do that it motivates me to work harder. Here goes,

age: 33
status: married, one (5 yo) child
height: 5'2"
weight: hovering between 148/149 lbs (I used to weigh around 165 one year after the birth of my son)
goals: 125 lbs, I would also like to start running. I'm not sure why, but I think about it a lot, I even dream about running sometimes. Perhaps it is one of those challenges that I feel if I overcome it I will be a much stronger person, not just physically but mentally as well. So if anyone has any advice for me on starting running, I'd love to hear it.

Have a great week ladies,
traceyj

Definitely give running a try Tracey...I would start slow though and just challenge yourself a little more each time. I am not a runner but I do jog...never thought I could even do a mile but I alternated between walking and jogging and pushed myself a few more steps each time...it is surprsing how it adds up and that you can push yourself just a little more. I don't use a headphone when I jog but think that might be nice too...I sort of have a little army type rhythm going on my head which helps. Otherwise, I get a little bored. I have found that the jogging is more interesting than walking...guess it goes faster.

So, keep us posted!!!

Running

Hi Tracey,
I'm a runner and would definitely say to start slowly and work your way up. Maybe start with some walk/runs and gradually work up your running time and decrease your walking time. I'm pretty sure there is a thread somewhere on this forum about starting a running program - maybe if you do a search you can find it. Also you could go to runnersworld.com and click on the beginner's program - maybe that would be helpful for you.
Running definitely gives me a sense of satisfaction that I don't get from any other cardio exercise.
Have fun!!

RE: Running, Weight Loss Programs, Etc.

Hi Everyone!

And congratulations on your weight loss & overall physical activity improvements! It's such a feeling of accomplishment when we tackle something (or lose poundage) that we've been working so hard for.

I have lost 0 lbs this week. I did Circuit Max twice, MIC once, and jogged once. Unfortunately, my right knee, which had been giving me serious pain for several months and then seemed to be fine, decided to flair up again. I had to walk this morning halfway through my 4 mile route. My knee pain started when I upped my mileage too quickly while training for a 1/2 marathon last winter. So please, TraceyJ, listen to your body when you start running, because it can be brutal on your body. I still love it, though, and dream of being a runner, in spite of my bad back, bad knee, etc :)

I am going on vacation tomorrow for just over 2 weeks and hope to get in some regular exercise. Maybe even lose a lb or two? At least not gain!!

By the way, I have been looking into various "healthy eating" plans lately. Have any of you looked at a book called "The Schwarzbien Principle"? It follows the theory of insulin response to sugar/high starch/high carbo foods and how that, and not fat, leads to weight gain. It seems to make alot of sense and I am thinking of following it. Suzanne Somers has published a couple of books that loosely follow this idea as well. I would be really interested in your thoughts on this.

Thanks! I'll check in when I get back.

RE: Running, Weight Loss Programs, Etc.

The diet sounds interesting Sandra...is there something on the web about it. This whole eating thing is confusing sometimes isn't it...I have been a dieter for almost 42 years!...so, have experience the good the bad and the ugly. The only thing I can say for certain is that weightlifting is a must...and a sensible diet follows closely behind...and of course, consistency...in all areas...that is the one that gets us every time.

Lately, I have been simplifying my eating...granola and fruit in the morning, try to stick with natural foods during the day about every three hours, fruit and vegies...and then a simple protein at night, grilled usually, vegies again and a natural fruit bar for dessert or fresh fruit. Once a week, dinner out and whatever I want, although as I continue exercisng and losing weight I find I can eat less and less and feel full.

The insulin factor in our foods is interesting also...I have read a little bit about it but need to study more...definitely a factor in our weight, metabolism, and other areas of health.

Hope some of the others can add insight here.

RE: Running, Weight Loss Programs, Etc.

Hi again,

I just purchased the book "The Schwarzbein Principle" to take with me on holidays. I've just started it but will be happy to report on it when I'm back, if you're interested. I initially heard of Diana Schwarbein when I got Suzanne Somers' "Get Skinny on Fabulous Foods" from the library. Dr. Schwarbein wrote the foreward and is a leading endocrinologist who explains in easy detail how the body works and why low-fat, high-carb diets don't work (and why they are dangerous over the long term). She advocates eating natural fats & proteins, as well as some carbos. I'll know more after I finish reading the book! As far as info on the Web, I don't know any exact sites.

It sounds like your diet is very healthy already.

By the way, Suzanne's book has some fab recipes (as does her Eat, Cheat & Lose Weight).

Take care!

Sandra

RE: Running, Weight Loss Programs, Etc.

Thank you everyone for your kind words of encouragement. It sounds to me like everyone is doing well.
I was all psyched to start a running program, & then this stinking heat wave hit. I have to modify my cardio workouts or I will fall over. I hate this!!
The good news here in Baltimore is that it is supposed to break Friday night. But tomorrow is supposed to be a killer. We'll see!
Limping Along,
Ruth :)

RE: Running, Weight Loss Programs, Etc.

p.s. Why is it that every time it gets really HOT I crave ice cream???

RE: Running, Weight Loss Programs, Etc.

Word association that goes way back to when you were just a tadpole:

Hot weather=ice cream!! Easy!;-) This is a good time of the year to own a Dairy Queen franchise.

Tracey,
My sister started a running program after reading a book at the beach (with a beer in one hand and a smoke in the other). I'm happy to say that after starting eight weeks ago, she now can run for 30 minutes at a time. I run for 30 minutes before she gets here in the morning and then we run together for 30 minutes. I'll get the name of the book for you. It maps out how to start slowly. I think my sister started with running 2 minutes and walking two for 30 minutes for the first week. I can also attest to the fact that this program has helped her to lose at least 40 to 50 pounds. She looks marvelous. I'm almost jealous of the progress her body makes on a weekly basis! We also use Cathe's videos and weight train 4 to 5 days a week. I also cook her 5 healthy meals a day and send them off with her...what a sister I am, huh?
Good luck to you in your running!
Amy
