Weight Loss Accountability

OK...I am training for a half marathon in May. I would like to lose about 10# by then. I am 5 feet tall and 117#. I was in the 105-109 range last summer eating clean, and running about 15-20 miles per week. I live in the midwest, and running on the treadmill just doesn't give me the same feeling (although I continue to do 3-4 miles each workout). This is my trouble: I cannot stay accountable for nothing! I am good for 2 days, and then start eating crap again. I have done well doing weight watchers in the past (physically weighing in each week) but want to find something that doesn't cost as much, if there is such a thing. Anyone have any good ideas for me?!

I also have an issue with accountability. I go to a nutritionist weekly and I still feel like I play games. (ya know- eat really light the 2 days b/4 I go and do cardio right before weigh in.
I was doing really well until Thanksgiving and haven't been able to get back into it. I gained 10lbs over the holidays and I am still having issues getting back into healthy eating. It is sooooo frustrating.

Maybe you can try one of the check in and challenges forum and be accountable to that. Did you get STS? or what about a relative(s). At the end of last summer, about 15 of my cousins did a biggest loser challenge. We pd $5/week for 13 weeks. The winner got the pot. I kept track of % of weight lost for everyone and did weekly updates. It definitely helped. But the contest ended the friday before Thanksgiving and it has been downhill ever since. :(

My hopes:
1. STS will give me the motivation I need to get back to eating well. I am hoping for an STS check in. I would like somewhere to post goals, weight, BF, etc. I haven't seen anything yet. But I think it might be too early. I started STS today.
2. I will be 40 at the end of April and my goal is to lose about 17-20 lbs by then.

Thanks for the reply! I did get STS, and it is scheduled to arrive at my house on Monday YEAH! Sadly, I don't have any family around me right at the moment. I will snoop around here to see if I can find a weight loss check in too.

Thanks,
Becky

The holidays were bad for me too! I just couldn't snap out of it!

'Luckily' for me, I got a virus day after Christmas and didn't feel like eating a thing for a few days. I took the opportunity to use that as a jump start to getting rid of the bad foods in my diet.

I have found that I can stick way better with anything if I don't eat any sugar, of any kind other than fruit sugar in fruits and juice.

Maybe that can be something you can try to see if it helps you make better over all food choices.

If you haven't read 'Burn the fat feed the muscle' I highly recommend it! It is extremely motivating! There is a challengers check in on the Challengers forums called Catheletic supporters , people there follow the books recommendations according to their needs and it feels good to share the journes with people who are on a similar path. I have only just started, it would be fun for you to be there too!

Also wanted to second the Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle book. The things I love about it that I hadn't tried before are:

1) The book addresses the mental aspect of trying to get to our goals, and how to overcome the reasons we mess up and sabotage ourselves. You know, the whole, I know exactly what to do, but can't seem to do it, thing. It addresses goals and how to train your brain to change your bad habits into good habits.
2) Eating 5 actual meals that are all the same in calories per day, not 3 somewhat bigger ones and 2 small snacks. Snacks don't fill me up for very long...especially not several hours.
2) Not trying to eat at such a low caloric intake (you can do this as long as you are exercising IMO) - I am doing 1600 calories/day (I am 5' 4.5") and although I am sometimes hungry at the end of the day, it's minor and I can deal with it. But I am not starving, and I am losing weight!
3) Allowing myself a cheat meal (but nothing too crazy) every 4th day, and also having higher calories on that 4th day. That keeps me from feeling too deprived, and it is working so far. I wouldn't want to live without ever feeling like I can't eat anything really bad for me. :D

I check in with Cendrine on the thread she mentioned. Feel free to join us!

diet and exercise

I completely understand the fluctuation of weight. 1st your up then your down. Wish we could all just stay down. I always weight myself after I've done a good cardio exercise routine. It makes me feel allot better about myself when I've dropped a pound or two. Then there's times when you've worked out all week long and haven't dropped a single pound. I know it has to do with what I ate that week. Usually when I eat Salmon twice a week with only a vegetable, no side dishes, that's when I lose the weight! All I can suggest besides Weight Watchers is to just eat lots of protein, fish and veggie without the side dishes. the side dishes are what kill me on the scale. Oh, and god bless you on running a marathon. I could never do that, I'm not in the right kind of shape to be a runner. And I have bad knees. But the treadmill does just fine for me. Good luck on your run and have fun!

Thank you for your help!

I took the advice of others, and purhased the BFFM book. I haven't gotten very far, but it has already helped motivate me. I think for me, it's a lot of negative self-talk that gets in my way. I also ran 4.5miles in 36 degree sunny weather, which for us Midwesterners, was a heat wave. It felt soooooo good to get outside again. It is just what I needed. So my plan is this: Read and follow the BFFM, incorporate STS into my marathon training regime. I will take pictures as I start my journey today, as it sounds like the scale may not always be an accurate tool in helping you determine your progress.

Thanks everyone!

Becky

where's your half marathon?

Just wondering...I'm in the Midwest too and have the same issues as you, not accountable for long enough. That book sounds interesting...I'll have to check into that! I'm training for a marathon in May in Lincoln NE, I did 13 miles on the treadmill on Sat-talk about torture (of course, I have a cold, so I had to blow my nose pretty much every mile-but I did it!) It's supposed to be near 50 next weekend...hopefully that will melt some ice and snow!
Thanks for asking the question and good luck!
