It may sound weird, but to lose water weight, drink more water! When you are dehydrated your body holds onto whatever water it can, which can mean additional pounds on the scale. Also, if your diet contains a lot of sodium, that can make you retain more water.

It's hard to tell from the scale how much is water weight and how much is just weight. I suggest having your body fat measured. Have it done about every 6 weeks to see if you're making progress. Try to center your diet around lean protein and veggies, with occasional fruit. Drink plenty of water. Hopefully that will get the scale moving in the right direction and help with feeling bloated.

Mindy, this has been happening to me A LOT lately! DH and I have been doing STS since Feb 09 and I have noticed that since Mesocycle 2, I have been retaining water. I have been taking water pills and drinking more water (I know it sounds stupid). This combo and Midol during my period have been helping. I don't take them every day but when the bloating is getting on my nerves. :)

Yep! To echo the other posters - drink more water! Your body will hold onto it if it feels like it's not getting enough. If you drink water, you'll help flush out the older stores and get thinkgs flowing again.

Usually if I'm retaining water, I'll drink a lot during the day, and then next it'll flush out (no pun intended! :) )

I agree with the previous poster about increasing your water intake. Pineapple works really well to decrease water retention, as does asparagus, celery, parsley and garlic. I used to get really bloated a day or two before TTOM and one day of fasting with fresh veggie or fruit juices really helped.

If it is more than an occassional occurance I would urge you to find out what the underlying cause is.

salt substitute

If you add more salt to your food than you really need you might try salt substitute which is potassium and adds a little bit of that salty flavor. I would recommend combining it with sodium salt because its not exactly the same flavor. Yoga helps with getting fluid out of the system because the lymphatic fluid gets moved around by the muscles, it doesn't have its own venous system to move it. I heard that on House so I don't really know if its 100% true.:D

Water water water is best, and along with the suggestions of asparagus and celery being natural diuretics, you can also drink a cup or two of coffee (black) because it too helps rid the body of excess water. Just don't rely on it if you can help it, but use it first thing in the morning (along with water) to help flush the body of excess water. For every cup of coffee you drink you should follow it with two cups of water!

If those suggestions don't help, do see your doctor! Excess water retention can cause high blood pressure. Also, water retention can be caused by problems with the pituitary gland, the adrenal gland...or both. You are probably fine, but monitor yourself!
