Was it dumb to buy GS Chest & Triceps?

When I can never finish all the pushups in a Cathe workout? I kept reading here how so many of you made strength gains with GS C&T that I wanted to get it.

Does anyone else excuse herself when they can't do everything Cathe does?

Guess I'm just looking for company!

Hi Susanne!

No, it wasn't dumb for you to get this. This is one really tough workout. GS Chest & Triceps is one of the toughest of Cathe's workouts for me to get through. I couldn't do all of the pushups when I started either. I certainly can't do them without taking extra breaks. Usually after the 42nd pushup, I need to take extra breaks. I just finished doing P90X and vastly improved my pushup capacity. And like Tony says "do your best and forget the rest". I always try to do one more rep the next time or try and do it in less time. I did make great strength gains with the GS series and don't regret getting them for a second. It's my favorite split series. Just keep plugging away and you'll get there. The secret to doing pushups is to just keep doing them and they do get easier.

This is a great workout, and the pushups are a built in "work up to it" type exercise which continuously motivates. Currently, I do them from my knees and I only do every other set, until it nears the end (16,12,8,6,4,2). Work unfortunately prevents me from being as consistent as I'd like to be, thus my strength isn't there right now. But that's okay. I will do more when I get there!

No, it wasn't dumb. First of all it's great to have a workout that challenges you. You have something to work up to and just think how you'll feel when you accomplish something that you thought you couldn't do. I can do all of them but only the first 3 sets on my toes and then I drop to my knees and finish the rest.

I don't even do the push ups in GS Chest & Tris (I have a ganglion cyst in my wrist that flairs up every single stinkin time I do push ups, so it's not worth it to me) and I don't regret for a moment buying this dvd. I'll usually sub in some decline bench presses or something else instead.

As the others have already said, you'll eventually work up to what Cathe does, if and if you don't, so what? You'll still see a lot of gains doing what you can do.

The premixes on this are great! I could never do all those pushups but I still enjoy the workout!

I usually put longer breaks between the sets of push-ups in GS. There just isn't enough muscle recovery time there for me.

Don't beat yourself up about it: it's a tough series of push-ups. Just do what you can, as best you can, and keep trying to do better. Rather than going to knees, you might want to do on-the-toes push-ups, but from a different angle, having the upper body higher than the lower body to make the move easier. Choose the lowest prop you can (a wall, a kitchen counter, the edge of a bathtub or chair seat, a high step, a step set at 10/8/6/4 inches...in order of increasing difficulty) and try to improve by moviing closer and closer to hands on the floor.

I never do pushups in any of Cathe's videos (I just can't do them and don't like them!). I have the GS Chest and Triceps and absolutely love it! I usually skip the pushups and still get a GREAT chest workout. My chest is usually FRIED after doing the workout without the pushups! You made a great buy!

I don't do the push ups either and I do as the above poster does: I sub with extra bench presses, flyes, etc.

Even if you don't do the push ups, or only ever work up to doing half of the excessive (in my opinion) total number, this is an excellent DVD and well worth having in your collection.

Remember: which exercises you do remains totally at your discretion.
