Warrior Dash - Have you done one?

Anyone participated in a Warrior Dash? If so was it worth it? How painful/difficult was it? What did you do to prepare for it?

TIA,
Jean

:D Hi, Jean!!!!!!!!!!! Saw this post was by YOU and just had to respond. I've got a Warrior Dash on my schedule in June. But I've also got The Tough Mudder in 3 WEEKS and I'm afraid. I wish these 2 events were scheduled the other way around. :D I'm curious what others have to say about the WD, too.

I'm scheduled to do the WD in May. I've never done one before but I thought it was more of a fun thing to do where you got muddy. I saw the website for the Tough Mudder and that did look a little more involved than the WD. I was under the impression if you could run about 3 miles you'd be fine to do the WD. You both have me worried now....

Hey Gayle, You didn't know you were secretly twisting my arm did you?

Regina, I heard the same thing, that if you can run you can do it. Obviously upper body strength will come in handy for any of the climb over obstacles. My biggest fear is doing this all while wet. I can't stand wet shoes so I don't know how I'm going to make 3+ miles in wet shoes and clothes. The first obstacle of the course here is water.

I hope others who have completed one will respond and tell more of their experiences.

You'll be fine for the Warrior Dash. I don't want to downplay it, so don't take this as me putting it down, but I think of the WD more of a 5K with an obstacle course. It won't be easy, but you won't die. lol ANd that's what I keep telling myself about the Tough Mudder. My personal biggest concern, honestly, are my contacts. I can't see without them and I'm going to get all COVERED and CAKED in mud in the TM. And Jean, you're right, UPPER body strength is going to come in real handy. THAT is my OTHER big fear for the Mudder. Oh well, it won't be easy, but it's not gonna kill me. ;)

GO FOR IT!!!!!

Funny you mention the WD...my husband and his brother signed up for one in June. But, I doubt he will make it because I am due on June 15th, right around the same time as the dash. Oh well, there's always next year!

Did the WD last summer and signed up again for this June.

Before it, I was scared and thought I was gonna die!! After, I was covered in mud, smiling, and laughing. It wasn't that hard. The walls to climb over were maybe mid-torso high. Just a jump and push over - like getting out of a pool without a ladder. Running through the mud isn't easy, because your feet stick, but a lot of people spent time walking, and I did, too.

The net climb was rough, but I'm afraid of heights, and I didn't like having to turn around and go down the back backwards, but only because I'm afraid of heights. There was a tire run - no big deal, a fire leap (the fire was maybe knee high) and by then I was soaked, so I wasn't going to go up in flames.

What else? A belly mud-crawl, a deep (waist high) mud and water wade through, a stacked step pyramid of hay to climb, and multiple short steep BMX bike hills to run (walk) over. The hills were tough - they came near the end and I was tired.

There we also culverts to crawl through - a little rough on the knees. And a steep, muddy hill with just a rope to help you up - that was a little tough, but doable. And a junk yard of cars to clamber over.

Fun, nothing un-doable, and lots of fun.

From what I've read about the tough mudder, it looks harder.

I think any Cathlete could tackle the WD

Nan

You truly don't have to worry at all. Depending on how large your particular WD is, you will spend a good deal of time standing in line waiting to start each obstacle - so you aren't even really running a full 5k straight, at 5k effort. Not by a long shot! The obstacles are fun, and totally doable. There were people of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels at the one I participated in - it's all about having fun.

Anyone in ANY level of shape at all could easily complete one of these. I think the Tough Mudder is supposed to be a little more challenging, but .... in general, these things are designed as fun runs, even though the marketing tries to suggest otherwise.
