walking with weighted vest

Hello everyone, I wanted to start walking with a weighted vest. I found a 10lbs vest. I was just wondering if this was enough weight. Or should I return it and purchase one that goes up to 20lbs. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's recommended for walking to not exceed 10% of your body weight, and to work up to that.

Last summer, I added a weighted vest to my walks. I started conservatively, with 3 pounds, then worked my way up to 8 pounds.

Shortly after I received my weighted vest from Cathe I took it on a walk with me. OUCH!!! I had some serious DOMS going on!! Take Kathyn's advice & build up!!!
I did use the entire 10lbs on a walk over Christmas & was fine but thta 1st timeout was a killer.

Thanks so much for your help, I think the 10lbs vest will be perfect. Now if only all this snow could disappear... I could start walking.

I bought a 20lb adjustable X-vest before Cathe's 10lb vest was released.
I did not know about the 10% rule, so I strapped on all 20lbs and hopped on my elliptical:eek: I tired uper fast!
I thought to myself.... can you imagine what it's like for anyone who has 20 or more pounds to lose? I felt really bad carrying that weight. I was all too happy to yank it off.
My brother is overweight and complains he is tired all the time. His wife complains he falls asleep on the couch every single night. It is no wonder!
An extra 20lbs wore me out. Grant it, you can get use to carrying the extra weight after a while, but that is tough!
