So what kinds of supplements and vitamins does everyone use?
I'm feeling like I need to do some different things

So what do you guys take and why?
Thanks
Christie

I only take a multivitamin. Right now Im taking the one from Trader Joes for women, but I routinely try different brands. Ive tried other supplements in the past (l-glutamine, creatine, etc) and honestly didnt notice enough of a difference to continue taking them. I get best results just focusing on solid nutrition (real food)

I take these daily....

Multivitamin
1000 mg Vitamin C
1200 mg calcium
Krill oil Omega 3
Biotin supplement

I take the calcium for bone health because I'm 56 years old. The vitamin C helps with my blood vessel strength and just generally avoiding sickness. Biotin supplement to avoid hair thinning after menopause. (I don't have any hair thinning, so either it works or I wasn't going to have any anyway!) And Krill Oil Omega 3 for heart health & low cholesterol.

I also, without fail, get the flu shot every year. It works!!!!

I take the new chapter organics prenatal vitamin (still breastfeeding) it is a whole food complex and fermented for better digestion. I have only taken the prenatal but compared to every single other vitamin I have ever taken, I find this one does not upset my stomach at all. if the regular womens doesn't agree with me I will continue to take the prenatal long after I need that specific one. the nutrients are not that far off what I feel I need anyway.
I also take flora brand algal DHA.
I also keep b complex and magnesium for when I feel a headache coming on, I take super doses and it does seem to fend off most headaches for me.

I am not a big fan of supplements/vitamins and only take B12. Who knows what is in any of them as there is no regulation or accountability as to ingredients. Rather eat well.

I take
New Chapters Raw multi for women
fish oil
biotin (hair/nails)
protein shake post workout ,
AST4500 BCAA's (to prevent muscle breakdown or catobolism of tissue )
5 grams Allmax glutamine powder(muscle repair post resistance training)

Winter months I add probiotics to boost my immune system.

JeanneMarie,

I am not a doctor so take what I share with a grain of salt. There have been a number of reports in the last year+ about recent studies on the benefits of calcium supplements. These studies have been showing an increased risk of heart attack in those who take calcium supplements. You might want to ask your doctor about this. My naturopath suggested I not take calcium supplements and to find calcium through other more natural sources. It's even been in the news, on the radio etc... I just wanted to share this - again - I am no expert.

Thanks cecififi,

I appreciate the info. I'm pretty well versed on calcium supplements and the benefits and risks. I've been diagnosed with osteopenia, so it's important that I take a supplement. I'm not taking the mega calcium supplements (Boniva, Fosamax etc.) and those are the ones they've decided have undesireable side effects.

My doctor and I have talked extensively about it, and a regular calcium supplement is good for me!

When I remember to take vitamins  I usually take:

-Multivitamin
-Fish Oil or Flaxseed Oil capsules
-Glucosamine & Chondroitin (joint pain)
-Resveratrol Red Wine Extract w/green tea (for heart health)

Osteoporosis is very prominent in my family. I have been advised from my doctor to take calcium supplements too, but have not done so yet.

I take the following daily:

Prenatal multi (since I plan to have more children)
Vitamin D (doctor's orders--blood test showed I have low levels)
Iron (same as above)
Fish Oil or Krill Oil
Flaxseed Oil
Chocolate Calcium Chew (osteoperosis runs in my family)
Glucosamine/Chondrotin (to see if it helps with knee pain, and it seems to be)

ETA: I totally agree with PP who said that food is the best source of nutrients. So, I eat as well as I can--including a focus on the nutrients blood tests show I am lacking--, then I take my vitamins as an insurance policy. In the end, if all I do is literally pee out the vitamins, oh well. For me, it's worth it.
