Visit to parent's house

On Saturday I am going to my parent's house and staying for 4 nights. I have been doing really well with eating and exercising all of March. I am planning on running 3 days while I am there, but I don't actually know if I will have time or if they will have me running around like a crazy lady. Also, all I have been thinking about for the past week are cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, and crab cakes (they live near Philadelphia). I currently live in Denver and really they don't have that kind of food here. I am scared I am going to go completely out of control, but at the same time I really never get to eat this stuff anymore. Maybe I could pick one of my Philadelphia cravings each day I am there and indulge for lunch, but only if I workout? What would you guys do????

TIA,

Karin

I like your suggestion of eating one craving a day. And don't worry about the "only if you work out" thing. A couple of days of indulgence isn't going to set you back.:) Just pick it up again as soon as you're home!

Mmmmmm cheesesteaks. Boy do I miss those. Karin, I would never eat one of those soft pretzels from a street vendor, I was always nervous about the constant exposure to Philly's not so clean air. :p

If I were you I'd go for the cheesesteaks for lunch. How often do you get to eat a real Philly cheesesteak? Crabcakes are yummy but not really Philly specific (more like Maryland specific LOL), but you are allowed to indulge yourself once in a while, & do the cardio if it'll make you feel better psychologically. It's only four days, you can get back to the diet when you come home.

BTW, where do your parents live? I was born in Abington, lived in Upper Darby, moved to south Jersey when I was 13, & have lived in a Philly suburb for most of my life. I really miss the area.

I agree with Shelley that your one craving a day is a good idea. Denver to Philly is a long way to go without indulging in a cheese steak. Have a wonderful trip.

I also agree with Shelley. Allowing yourself the one-a-day indulgence sounds like a plan and 4 or 5 days isn't going to cause a setback with your workouts (although, like you, I'd probably be thinking it would:) )

Hi LauraMax. My parents live in Washington Township in south Jersey. I was actually born in Upper Darby then lived in Washington Township and went to elementary, middle and high school there. Sounds like me might have crossed paths at some time :) .

PS - I know what you mean about crab cakes not being a NJ thing, but they are so nasty here in Denver that they are like heaven in NJ. Maybe we can make it to MD once and I can have really yummy ones!! :9

When I go visiting I try to loosen up a bit. Being too strict when I want to enjoy myself just leads to overeating eventually, IMO, cause I end up feeling deprived and grumpy.

As Shelley said, you can pick up again when you get home.

Edited to correct my appalling grammar!

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow - what a ride!’ — Peter Sage

I say, live a little! You may find that one taste of a cheesesteak or pretzel is all you need. Sometimes that stuff is much better in memory than in a body not used to eating it. Besides, denial is a sure path to binging!!

BTW, I lived in S. Jersey for years, just outside of Philly. It is still one of my favorite places to visit. My kids adore both the zoo and the art museum. Hope it's warm enough for you to get around some...

Take care,
Marie

I would take the opportunity to really indulge in the local goodies, BUT I would also exercise over and above what I normally would do. You can walk or run there, and before and after you go you can ramp up your exercise level.

This is sort of like what I do for Xmas or Thanksgiving week when I know I'll eat more than normal.

Thanks for your thoughts on this subject everyone. I am going to try very hard to be controlled and disciplined, but it is sometimes hard when you are around people who aren't. It is so easy to slip back into your old ways x( .
