Videos for men to build muscle and tone up

I am 36 and have been exercising regularly by lifting dumbbells (self guided) and doing an aerobic routine (with a video) on alternate days. I need more structure and I have seen your videos and like them (my wife has several). I looked at videos for men at Collage video and I honestly don't like any of them. I also looked at the "Power 90" videos and it is just to much of a gimmick.

I am wondering if any of your videos would be suitable for a male for the purpose of building muscle mass (arms, chest, legs) and toning abs & back (i.e. spare tire area) , chest, etc..? Or are they geared more toward a woman's exercise needs and problem areas of the body?

I like to exercise 6 days a week and take Sunday off. I have an hour a day for exercise but no more. I would say I am at an intermediate level. I guess I am looking for a recommended rotation too.

The only thing I am not interested in is step aerobics. Only because I am 6'5" and getting up on the step limits my range during over-head reaching moves.

Thanks in advance for advice.

Hey Bob,

I'm obviously not Cathe but thought I would let you know that my husband uses her tapes. He is getting in great shape & lifts very heavy. Cathe does mention a couple of times that women have issues with lifting heavier weight over their heads but doesn't everyone? LOL

Being at an intermediate level, you should have no problems with any of Cathe's tapes. I would suggest that you stick with the strength tapes rather than the endurance tapes. Try the Pure Strength & Slow & Heavy series on for size. I think you'll be quite pleased.

As for aerobics, Cardio Kicks is great for getting the heart rate up & has very little reaching overhead.

Hope that helps a little.

Hey Bob!

YES, Cathe's tapes are suitable for men!! My husband is 6'3" and used to weigh about 175. Well, about 2 yrs. ago he started jogging a bit and had trouble with soreness in his knees. I had been using Cathe's Pure Strength Series and he joined me on a simple rotation of: Jog three days, Cathe weight tapes 3 days. Flash forward 2+ years: My husband is now running 15 miles a week and rotating Cathe's Pure Strength Series, Slow and Heavy Series, and now her Pyramid Series. He has gained 20 lbs. of muscle and is in the best shape of his life! Not bad for a 48 yr. old. Honestly, I wish Cathe would use more men in her video weight workout tapes. Oh, almost forgot, my husband also enjoys Cahte's new Boot Camp Workout.
Go for it Bob, you wont be sorry. Cathe is really the best on the market for both men and women!

Looks like this is turning out to be the "Deb thread"! (Hi Deb D!!!) Bob, came back to say that my hubby loves Bootcamp too. It is very easy to follow choreo wise, but a very intense workout. There are also two males in the vid that give it their all! Have FUN!

:) Thank You "Debs" for your quick and thorough responses. I will get Slow & Heavy DVD to start with and also try the Pure Strength tapes that my wife bought a few years ago. If all goes well I'll migrate to the Pyramid & Boot-camp DVDs.

I am glad to hear that your husbands have found them to be successful.

Hi Bob!

Deb D. back again to mention a workout called Intense Moves by Gin Miller. This workout is one my DH could do easily enough without tripping on his own feet. It is an athletic styled aerobic workout that offers three different levels of difficulty and is easy to modify if you don't/can't do a certain move. My DH is also a ski patrol and loves this workout to augment his running and weight training workouts. A plus: there are men in this workout!!!!

Hey Deb H. How ya doin?? It is HOT, HOT, HOT, out here in Central California! Hope all is well with you! DD

Hey Bob,

Very well! Let us know ( and Cathe too....she needs to here from her masculine fans;-) ) how you like them.

Take care, Deb D.

Hi Bob
I am one of the other males on the site.I started with Cathe weight tapes that were previously mentioned.I was tired of going to the gym & I like to workout in the morning before work.I now have most of Cathes collection & I can't believe it I mastered step (even Rythmic Step). It is a really good balance with my running. My favourite weight tapes are Slow & Heavy , Pure Strength & the Pyramids.Good solid muscle builders-just increase the weight. My overall favourites are BodyMax & Circuit Max- total variety & fun. There are very few male instructors out there that match Cathe.I have tried them all however there is a woman named Mindy who rocks.tough workouts.I recommend Mindys Boot Camp & Strength Express & Awesome Strength.I have all of the Mens of Steel series-basic beginner.I have Navy Seal training (boring but good workout).I also have Billy Blanks contact which uses a heavy bag.It is good.Try Cardio Kicks it is basic choreography & fun.Don't be afraid to learn step.It really is good -it takes practice but you develop overall coordination. If you have any questions feel free to email me through the site.Take care

Thanks so much for the recommendations. I may try some of the stepping (since we already own quite a few of Cathe's tapes). I just can't put it up high. Not because I don't want to do it, but I'm 6'5" and our ceilings are 8'. I can't even reach straight up from the floor without hitting the ceiling. That was may only reasoning behind not doing step. I'll give it another shot and just limit my reaches to up and forward rather than just up. I'm going to get the Slow & Heavy DVD for my weight training days.

Bob, if it's your first time stepping or your first time stepping with Cathe, you won't want to put it up high, trust me ;)
