Veins in Arms

Hi All!

I have a question about your experiences with veins. I know that people with larger muscles typically have veins on their arms that are more prominent than those who don't lift. However, in my case, I do not have large muscles in my arms. I have done lots of strength training and am very *strong* (at least, I'd like to think so!), but I just do not have big muscles (nor have I ever). Which is fine with me...not really trying for "size" but more just overall toning and strength. The thing is, for the about the past year or so (I've been working out solidly for about 2-3 years) I have noticed that the veins in my lower arms (and particularly my hands) are really popping out.

What has caused this difference, do you think? Like I said, I have lifted for quite some time but do not have muscles that are any larger than they have ever been. They may be more dense...but they are definitely not larger. Could it be that my body fat is lower and thus, that would cause the veins to "pop"? Or could it be the fact that I am going on 2-3 years of steady upper body work and this is all of a sudden causing the veins to pop more? I just think this is an interesting phenomenon and am curious what your experiences with this has been. A few years ago, it used to literally take nurses a few tries before they could even *find* a vein from which to do a blood draw. Now, I am looking like Arnold Swarzeneggar. OK...maybe that was a slight exaggeration but trust me, people make comments about it on a regular basis. I am starting to become self-conscious about it! Is this something I should be proud of or is it gross on someone with smaller muscles?

Thanks for the help and support, everyone! You guys are really the greatest. :)

I think it probably has a lot to do with just your biological make up and your body fat percentage. My body fat percentage is very low and my veins pop out when I work out. Both of my sisters were dance majors in college and both had very cut bodies, with low body fat, and both of them had those veins in the arms pop out as well. So, enjoy them, it is a sign of being in great shape. It is a lot better, than having soggy arms, right!!!!

I have veins in my lower arms and forearms. Also in my right bicep. It has a lot to do with body fat. I notice the lower my bf is the more they pop out.

Thank you both for your response. I really appreciate it and will stop being self conscious about it. Yeah...I have veiny hands and lower arms. So what?! ;-)

Personally, since I was a teeny bopper, I always loved veins in guys arms. I'd really like for mine to pop out too. However, the only ones that do are in my hands and my feet!

I don't know about that it's a sign of being in great shape though. There's an obese gal at work that has veins that stick out in her arms, and believe me, she's obese.
