Vegetarian....

Morning Ladies :)

Last night, I brought a ½ gallon of FF Organic Valley Milk, first time. Is that cows milk? silly question I know, but I really don’t know. I do NOT want to drink ‘ANYMORE’ cows milk. Starting today, I am going too slowly make changes in my diet.

I have decided to change my diet to a healthy vegetarian diet, well at least 80% change and for me that’s still good. I can honestly say that I am not the kind of person who change overnight, if takes me time. But, once I plant the seed in my head for change, my will for change is strong.

I have been reading your threads about vegetarian and animal meats etc.. etc.. And now I’m ready to make the switch. When I was younger, I grew up eating meats with every meal, breakfast, lunch & dinner and sometimes more. However, since I have gotten older I only eat one meat a day, either can tuna, chicken, fish, turkey or beef (beef occasionally) I mainly eat meats for protein, but I know there’s other healthier ways/sources I can get protein.

If you can send me any literature or give me any advice or a website where I can go to learn more about a vegetarian diet and life style. I truly appreciate it so much.

Teddygirl!

Welcome to the dark side;) Just kidding. Organic milk is still cow's milk. You need to buy soy milk or rice milk.

I'm vegetarian but I'm not the one with all the info. I'm quite sure lots of other will chime in here with tons of info.:)

I believe that would be cow's milk....I drink soy milk myself and I know there are some others that will be posted. My fav site is www.vegsource.com they have some message boards for new veggies to ask questions and I have always gotten fast responces....good lifestyle choice...:)...Carole

Ditto what Carole said. Organic milk still comes from a cow... it just comes from organic cows. ;)

I'm a huge fan of Silk Light soy milk - we drink the stuff by the gallons in my house. It's organic too.

vegsource.com is one of my favorite websites. Also, if you're thinking of going totally vegan, this website helped me out a TON:

Advice on how to make the transition, recipes, the importance of "practical veganism", etc. :)

Ladies,

Thank you so very much :) :) ;-) I’m going to buy the FF Soy milk, I brought it once about a month ago, first time and I loved it. The FF Organic milk was on sale, so I decided to try it, wasted my $$$$$$$ x( x(

First change today, NO more cow’s milk I'm going back to Giant Eagles to get me some FF Soy milk. I never tried rice milk do you buy at health stores. Thank you ladies so very much. I know there’ll be tons of questions and I hope you don’t mind me asking now and again :) Have a great day.

SO MUCH INFORMATION…………on the websites

I am overwhelmed THANK YOU! I printed so many recipes.

I'm going to buy some Tofu never tried it, to be honest I really don’t know what it is. Except, it can replace meat and you can do so much with it I'm sold :9 :9

I love eggs (only the white) what replaces eggs.

Tofu is made from soybeans. There are a bunch of different kinds, so make sure you get the appropriate type for the recipe you are making. ie, for stir-fries, you'll want firm or extra firm tofu that is packaged in water (found in the refrigerated section of the store). But, if you're making dips, smoothies, or a "cheese"cake, etc you want the silken tofu that comes in a cardboard box. Tofu doesn't have any flavor, which is great - it's a blank slate. You make it taste however you want it to. Cut it into cubes, and stir-fry with some veggies and soy sauce, and serve over rice. Quick, easy and delicious!

As for eggs... well, there are egg substitutes you can use in baking (I use Ener-G Egg Replacer - it's a powder that you mix with water - you can only use it for baking, not to make eggs for breakfast). If you are wanting something like scrambled eggs, then you could make scrambled tofu. You have a lot of options. :)

You should get yourself a good vegan cookbook. I recently bought Vegan Planet and it is hands down the best cookbook that I own. Every recipe I've tried has been outstanding. And it has great tips on how to replace eggs and dairy in various situations. I highly recommend it. :D

Silk is very good, and a favorite of many people, it seems. I like their enriched milk. Watch out for vanilla soy/rice/almond milks, though, as some can have quite a bit of added sugar. I even like the Silk unsweetened (though it may be a bit of an aquired taste).

My local grocery store carries "Rice Dream" rice milk.

I like Soy milk, but rice milk makes me gag. I cannot stand the taste. I accidentally bought it once thinking it was soy milk. I tried it, just about gagged and dumped the rest of it down the sink.

I really like Light Vanilla soymilk but I'm not too worried about added sugar, since I only drink about 1/2 of a cup with my cereal or steel cut oats in the morning.
