Val~how r u doing?

Hi Val, I know you don't know me from a can of spray paint, but I followed the threads about your heel/foot pain, as i too was experiencing something similar, and I know you said you were going to rest it for a week so I was just wondering how you're healing? I know it's tough to go "cold turkey" on the cardio without worrying about losing progress, etc., but I just wanted to check in and tell you I was thinking about you and hoped you'd be back on the step again really soon!
Your story probably saved me from severely damaging my own foot, because before I read your thread, I was "ignoring" my own foot pain like "maybe it'll go away if I just don't pay too much attention to it!" But after reading all the messages from the other forum members, and checking out the "foot-sites", I decided to put the step away and rest my foot for a solid week (from cardio), then start back up with some low impact kickboxing (Kathy Smith kickboxing workout).
So thank you for sharing your situation with us because you saved me before it was too late, and I really hope your foot is recovering so that you can get back to what you love.
P.S. on an up note~ i did find out that without any cardio, and 3 days of weight training/2 days yoga I still lost weight last week! So don't worry about the cardio too much~ and if you've never checked out yoga, maybe now would be a good time! Doesn't burn the same number of calories as step, but some yoga can make you sweat!
Good luck & speedy recovery....................Donna

Thanks for asking!

Hi, Donna!

Thank you so much for your concern; it couldn't have come at a better time. I am feeling depressed and stupid. I had been icing my foot and stretching it and taking ibuprofen, and it started feeling better. I hadn't done any cardio for several weeks, just ate clean and did MIS and PH a few times a week (and lost 4 lbs:)). I did Rhythmic Step on Saturday, and felt some discomfort afterwards, but it was fine by Sunday. Well, last night I decided to do RS again, but this time it was a whole different story. I felt no pain while doing it, but I was up all night in excruciating pain. I finally decided to get up and ice it at about 1:30 am, and guess what? I couldn't walk! I had to crawl on my hands and knees to the freezer to get ice. I was very frightened. I can walk now, but the pain is intense.

I had seen a nurse practitioner a few weeks ago, in order to get a referral to an ortho, but she wouldn't give me one. Said I would be able to do cardio in a week from when I saw her. I want to hobble into her office and say "oh yeah?". Anyway, I made an appt with my doctor and will INSIST on a referral. I need an expert to tell me how to rehab myself. I was obviously not ready for step aerobics.

It's funny you mention yoga, as after I iced my foot, I couldn't get back to sleep and I thought about yoga. Maybe now I need to introduce it into my life. I will search threads here, because there've been lots of discussions about various instructors, and types of yoga. I am interested in what you said about some yoga can make you sweat...any suggestions would be appreciated!

On the up side, my diet has never been cleaner, and I am able to do weight training without pain.

I am glad you learned from my experience. You may have caught your problem in time and kept it from progressing to the point I'm at.

Thanks so much for asking about me, and giving me a chance to vent. I'm getting all teary-eyed...as I always do when someone shows concern for me.

RE: Thanks for asking!

Veronica,

I was wondering about your foot, too. I know how depressing it can be. Good luck with your doctor's appt.
This PF can be tricky because, like you said, it doesn't hurt while your working out. You don't know what you can or can't get away with until after the fact x(.

Keep us posted!

RE: Thanks for asking!

Hi Val, sorry to hear your foot's not 100% yet, but give it time, and hey, I'm glad to see that clean eating and weight training can still shed pounds, I was worried my luck with it might have been a fluke!
As for yoga, my experience is minimal, but the one (and only so far)tape I have is "Kathy Smith's New Yoga Challenge" and a challenge is what it is, at least to me. I cannot believe that I actually break a sweat from what look likes simple stretching, but indeed I do! And I hate to admit it, but I really do feel both worked out AND relaxed when it's over. It won't replace my love for aerobics, but when in need of a substitute injury free workout, and even once a week just for a balanced workout, it'll do!
I've never tried it yet, but I hear the yoga workouts by Brian Kest (hope I got the name right?!) work up a really good sweat! There was a thread about his stuff previously.
Take care of your foot, and be patient, as my daddy use to say, "nature does the healing, dr.'s get the pay!"
Good luck, Donna

RE: Thanks for asking!

Hi Veronica! You poor thing! I have been having a problem with either PF or achilles tendontis and it has been so frustrating dealing with the pain off and on. I have been off cardio for about a week and a half now. At least my foot does not hurt as much anymore when I walk! It is very frustrating not doing cardio and trying to come up with ways to compensate. I went swimming last night and it was fine obviously. I can't see an ortho until the end of this month. I am very afraid of doing what you did and trying again too soon and injuring myself worse! I am very sorry that this happened to you and will be anxious to hear what the doctor has to say. I will be thinking of you!

By the way, Donna, I have been thinking trying out yoga while I have the opportunity! That is a good idea. I also am curious as to whether doing the Kathy Smith Kickboxing hurt your foot. I have been thinking of trying that one (I have it on DVD) but I wasn't sure how my foot would take it! Thanks, Sandra

RE: Thanks for asking!

This forum is so wonderful and intuitive too! I thought I might have PF until just last night when I researched achilles tendonitis, and it sounds closer to that, anyway...
The Kathy Smith kickboxing did not irritate my foot at all yesterday, and today is 24hrs later with no increase in pain or discomfort, so I think kickboxing might be a "thumbs up" alternative to step until I'm back to 100% with my foot/ankle/whatever?
The only modification I made (just to be on the safe side) was to the "boxer shuffle" she does, I didn't bounce too much on my feet (afraid I think!) but if you feel comfortable you can go for it, it's not a really high impact move or anything, I just think I was a little timid about bouncing around too much too soon. Also, I eliminated the "foot switch" move she does, once again, just being timid on my part.
Good luck, Donna

RE: Thanks for asking!

Thanks Donna for the feedback on the Kathy Smith kickboxing tape! I know exactly which sections you are referring to, so I will keep it in mind in case I try it this weekend! I am holding off until the weekend because I have this vision of me injuring myself on a weeknight and not being able to go to work the next day! So, during the week I have been sticking to strength training and swimming. Thanks for the info! Sandra

RE: Isn't....

Veronica,

How is your foot doing? Hope it's getting better. Have you been back to the doctor yet?

RE: Isn't....

Hi ascubanut!

I still have pain in the heel since I stupidly did RS on Nov 6. I have been unable to see my doctor until Nov 19. I have not done any cardio since Nov 6, but I have been doing the PS series( was doing PH and MIS rotation, but swithed now to PS) and continuing to keep a food log. Even with my occasional dietary lapses (I've discovered Fast Break, a new candy bar from Reese's...by far the best candy bar I have ever eaten in my life!), I have managed to maintain my weight, but my clothes are fitting better than ever. I have one particular pair of pants that I bought a few years ago that never fit good enough to wear, and I always haul them out when I need to see how I'm doing. Well, now I could actually wear them if I want to!

I am planning on having orthotics made...I hope that those will help once I get back into Cathe's cardio tapes.

So, I will continue to nurse this foot back to health, and maybe start walking after work, and see how that goes.

Veronica
