Vacation?

This sounds silly, but I am going on vacation tomarrow up to my parents lake home and am wonderingif I should bring my step or not and if any of you bring weights when you go on vacation?
I just don't want to get out of shape, and I'm not much of a runner, it's a mental thing I think. Or should I just say, to heck with it I'm on vacation and not workout at all?
I am only asking you guys this because I know you are all in good shape and have been working out longer than I have (two and a half years).

I've been working out for about 6 or 7 years now. And when I go on vacation, I GO ON VACATION! I acknowledge to myself that sometimes I need to take a physical and mental break from the exercise regime. Granted, I've never taken more than a week off, but I have never found that my fitness level has decreased upon my return. If you are doing weight-training, your hard-won muscles will not deteriorate into fat overnight. Muscles have memory!

If you feel like exercising, take a nice long walk, go for a bike ride or go for a good swim. Or if you like, just chill out on the porch, have a few Buds and shoot the breeze. Afterall, you're on vacation - do what you feel like doing!

Don't worry about it -- your step will be there when you get home!

Now you go out there and have a great, guilt-free vacation! That's an order!

TAKE A VACATION! If you feel it absolutely necessary to exercise, take a brisk walk. Not even a power walk. Just get your heart rate up a little. I'm going to Miami in a few weeks & that's all I'm planning on doing & the hotel I'm staying in has a gym. I will not use it!

Yeah, I guess you're right I should really take some time off. It won't hurt anything. I didn't realize just how obssesed I seem to have gotten with working out. Thanks for your advice. I can always go on a walk if I really need to get some excersize in for a day.
Thanks for your help!!:D

I agree with the everyone. Take some time to rest...unless you are going to be gone a long long time. :D
Someone asked Cathe what to do when you are on a long vacation. I think this is the thread.

I used to lug my step, dumbells, ankle weights, boombox and mat, sometimes my VCR/TV to hotel when we went on vacation. Not only did DH get tired of helping me haul all that stuff up and down to the car, it made the vacation stressful.
Walking around and enjoying the sights would have been much better on everyone.
Have fun. Even if by chance you did lose a little bit of your endurance, you will get it back before you know it. :D

I use to always take my step home when I went to my moms house. But that was also when I didn;t know what a day off meant:) Now I don't have to b/c when my sister came home the last time, she bought everything that she needed for working out and left it at moms house.
When I went on vacation last year to my sister-in-laws house I took my sneakers and a kickboxing workout.I was going to be gone for 10 days so I knew I needed something. And that went well.
Then when I went on vacation this year to cuba, I took my sneakers but they only got taken out of my bag for a tour. And I didn't even mind.I think my body needed a rest, and that was exactly what it got.
It is up to you.If you feel like you are going to feel awful if you don't work out, then I would.Atleast take your sneakers so that you can go for a run or a walk.I don't know if I would bother with the weights though, unless you just take some 15lbs and 8 lbs.Whatever you feel like doing, listen to your body...

Because exercising makes me feel great/more energetic throughout the day, I feel that doing it during vacation makes the vacation more enjoyable, as long as it doesn't interfere with all of the things my family wants to do. I agree that outdoor exercise (sightseeing, biking, hiking, etc) is a great way to work out during vacation, but I like to do power yoga when I can fit it in. It can be quite invigorating as well as relaxing and it does wonders for your upper body/core strength and flexibility. No equipment needed, either!

When I go on vacation to a place that I drive to, I take "stuff" with me: my step and a couple of sets of dumbbells (one heavyish pair, one light pair). Although walking and biking are great (and I do these on vacation), my structured workouts are still my favourite way to "relax".

I'm one of those people that just can't have a great day without a great workout in the morning to get me going. When I went to Florida a few months ago, I took PH, ME, and LL and brought along 15# DB and 8#ers. I used a chair for step ups (oooo those were killer step ups) and the edge of the heater along the floor for one leg lunges etc....there are ways to improvise. I did not bring a step along, just no room. Do what works or as others have said "take a vacation"

When we go up to our in-laws cabin I have been taking an exercise tube/bar that I got from Spri. I love it because I can work every muscle without lugging around all those weights. I also went for a walk every morning before things got too hectic just to clear my head. I look forward to doing this agin this summer! Susan

I just got back from a week in Orlando and I was gonna workout but instead just used the walking around the park as a substitute, even though my heart rate never really went up. Then I drank beer in every "world" in Epcot!! Heck I am on vacation!! Why clutter that valuable down time with workouts. I workout hard enough the rest of the year. In fact, after driving 900 miles and getting back home at 3:30 this morning, I was up at 6:30 this morning and am going to spin class today!! No lack of motivation here despite being away for a week!!

I try to work activities into my days on vacation, going for fast walks in cities, jogging in parks. I usually dive if I'm near the water. (Not much calorie-burning potential, but the tanks are heavy!)

I certainly don't work out as much as I do at home, but every couple of days in my hotel room I crank out a couple sets of 25 pushups, 50 squats, 50 lunges, some dips off a chair, and some situps and plank work. It only takes half an hour and really makes me feel good. My back and biceps don't get any exercise, but I can accept that.
