Vacation ideas?

My DH and I want to get away for about a week or so in September. I like to relax, go to the health club, the spa, and read books, and he likes to sight-see. The only thing I really don't like to do is keep moving and packing and re-packing like you have to do on a tour. I like to settle in somewhere. I looked at a Caribbean cruise, but it's hurricane season. We looked at spending a week in Paris, but it's super expensive with the current exchange rate. We'd both love to go to Hawaii, but it's an awful lot of flying time from New York when we have only a week to spare. Any ideas for a good, short vacation? Thanks.

How about Scottsdale Arizona? or San Francisco? You could combine that with a nice trip up to Napa..
Charleston? Nice, historical destination. You could head to the beach for a few days, if the weather is good...

When I was researching my honeymoon I came across a beautiful spot on a little island off Antigua called Jumby Bay. The pricing was reasonable & all inclusive, the hotel was fabulous (no cookie cutter rooms--everything was decorated in antiques) & they had regular trips to the main island. Unfortunately my crazy ex-hubby refused to fly so we had to find other options, but to this day I'm dying to vacation there.

I think Scottsdale is wonderful, it has great spas, but it may still be a little to hot in September. Sedona might work, it's a little further North, but it is beautiful! A little too new-agey for some people though.

This is my favorite place to stay in Sedona

How about Lake Tahoe? It should be beautiful there during that time.

Have a great day!

If you're in the mood for hiking, try Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada. FABULOUS! The Chateau Lake Louise also has a spa/massage, by the way.

I've alsways wanted to go to Charleston, SC. Or Austin, TX. What about the Biltmore Estate? Vermont would be lovely that time of year. The coast of Maine is beautiful too. Good luck deciding!

I love to vacation in the Outer Banks in the fall. It's hurricane season, but you can buy hurricane insurance before you go. There's something for everyone there. If you like it quiet and peaceful, I recommend the southern part of the Outer Banks. The northern end is nice, but it's much more hectic and full of people/stuff than the south.

The Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo area is my favorite. You can sit on the beach or go to the lighthouse or visit Kitty Hawk. Lots of options!

Another vote for the Outer Banks! We just got back from there (late March, early April) and we are usually there in the summer sometime. There is so much to do, can't fit it all in!

I have heard the October and November are the best times to go. Less people, less traffic, beautiful weather and less chance of a hurricane.

Try www.pirates-cove.com It is a beautiful community with gorgeous homes to rent. I would go for soundfront. This community is not for you if you want oceanfront. It is about a 4 minute drive to the ocean from Pirate's Cove.

Good luck!

I would love, love, love to go to a spa resort type of place. I found this one in AZ that looks gorgeous:

Conni, we went to Napa about 2 years ago for our vacation, and spent some time in SF, and we're not ready to go back so soon. Fabo idea, though!

Wow, that looks fantastic, Debbie. I didn't know about it and I live here, now I want to go there for a vacation :)

If you don't mind 100+ degrees in September (but at least it's a dry heat) and all the Phoenicians grumpy because it has been HOT for the past 5 months. I probably would go there between October and March. But it may be more expensive then, you probably get a better deal in September.

Did I hear someone say MAINE?! If you've never been to Bar Harbor, Me., I highly recommend it. Great restaurants (and not just lobster!), spectacular coastline etc. We went 5 yrs. ago and are headed back for what will in all likelihood be our final family vacation (my son heads off to Cornell in August). Kayaking, hiking, walking the beach, it's all good.
We're renting a house on Frenchmen's Bay this time:

"I looked at a Caribbean cruise, but it's hurricane season."

I have lived in Florida since 1996, near the water so we are the first to get evacuated in a hurricane. We have only been in a mandatory evacuation 1 time. Worst thing that ever happened to us was that we lost a palm tree, it fell over. Hurricanes are something that you keep in the back of your mind from June to November, but you do not let them take over your life. My opinion, go on the cruise.

If you want to go to the Caribbean and not worry about hurricanes, go to Aruba. The island is not in the hurricane belt. And it is an easy fight out of Newark.

Ireland. It's small enough that you can stay in a couple of B&Bs or Hotels and take some incredible daytrips. You can usually get some good hotel and package deals on travelzoo(and I don't mean guided tours--ewww). There are packages that include air, b&b vouchers, and car rental. From NYC, it's about 6-7 hours.

If you can only go to one area, do the west coast around Galway.

I tell ya, the place is magical. You'll never be the same! :)

Nancy:

It's not beachy, but it's posh and lovely and relaxing: Mohonk Mountain Lodge? It's just up the Hudson Valley from The City, so easy to get to. Supposed to have miles and miles of groomed hiking trails (cross country skiiing in the winter) and all sorts of relaxing and luxurious accomodations. I have never stayed there, but it is owned by a college friend, and she is a delight. http://www.mohonk.com/

Another thought is Horseshoe Bay Resort on Lake LBJ near Austin, Texas. It is on a lovely lake, has a terrific spa, a knockout pool and an excellent restaurant at the "Yacht Club." There is a very nice, new Marriott with yet another pool. Tennis, etc. We went there for our anniversary last year. I sat by the lake on a chaise on the sandy beach with my cell phone, a book and a drink... heaven. http://www.hsbresort.com/

Or ramp it up with Lake Austin Spa http://www.lakeaustin.com/. Very, very nice.

How about the Florida Keys? We stayed in a Great B&B there. It was just like a spa. I know this may sound crazy...but what about LasVegas? You can be as laid back as you want to. Rent a car and drive to Red Rocks. They also have some wonderful spas there. We stay off the strip and get incredible deals!

OMG...my favorite vacation ever was spending a week in Turks and Caicos and then heading over to Nassau to swim with the dolphins. Heaven...

Wellfleet, MA! All the crowds will be gone. You can walk the beaches alone... and, of course, indulge in some of those awesome Wellfleet oysters!
